Academic Competition Updates

About the international open competition

Georgian Technical University (hereinafter referred to as the University) announces an open competition for academic positions (Professor, Associate Professor, Assistant Professor, and Assistant) for a term of 4 (four) years starting from the 2025-2026 academic year in the following faculties: 

I. Deadlines for receiving applications and conducting the competition

1. Relevant information to participate in the competition (including the number of available places by subject groups of educational programs of all levels of study, etc.) will be published on the university website, as well as in the newspaper "Sakartvelos Respublika."

2. Applications for participation in the academic competition will be accepted from July 9 to July 15, 2025, between 10:00 and 17:00, at the secretariat of the respective competition commission.

3. The competition will take place from July 16th to July 22nd, 2025.

4. The results of the competition will be published no later than July 23rd, 2025 by the Competition Commission in a visible location within the relevant academic buildings and on the University website.

5. The Competition Commission will accept applications or complaints regarding any violations of the competition rules until July 25, 2025.

6. The final results of the competition, approved by the Academic Council, will be published on the University websiteno later than July 30th, 2025.

7. Affiliation and employment contracts will be signed with the competition winners after the final results are published and before the start of the 2025-2026 academic year.

II. Competition conditions

1. Eligibility Criteria 

a) To be eligible for the position of professor, a candidate must hold a doctorate or an equivalent academic degree and have at least six years of experience in scientific and pedagogical work;

b) To qualify for the position of associate professor, a candidate must hold a doctorate or an equivalent academic degree and have at least three years of experience in scientific and pedagogical work;

c) A candidate holding a doctorate or an equivalent academic degree may be considered for the position of assistant professor;

d) Doctoral students are eligible for the position of assistant;

e) A candidate with relevant professional experience (minimum of six years) may also be considered for an academic position. This candidate's qualifications must be validated through professional experience, specialized training, and/or publications, demonstrating the competence necessary to achieve the learning outcomes specified in the program;

II. Information on the Workload and Remuneration of Academic Staff

1. The responsibilities of academic staff include the following main components:

a) Educational-Pedagogical Duties: This encompasses lectures, practical sessions, seminars, laboratories, coursework, and course projects.

b) Consulting Obligations: This involves providing assistance and participating in practical experiences outlined in the educational program.

c) Scientific Research Activities. 

d) Participation in various events organized by the faculty.

2. Remuneration for academic staff is determined by the staffing schedule established by the university.

Professor’s Responsibilities

(Category "A")

1. Educational-pedagogical (lecture, practical, seminar, laboratory, course work, course project) workload - 15 hours per week, 390 hours per year;

2. Consulting obligation and provision-organization of practice outlined in the educational program;

3. Obligation to continuously monitor and analyze courses within their respective subject group. Based on the obtained results, ensures relevant updates and improvements to educational resources so that they align with modern teaching methodologies specified in the educational program and the defined learning outcomes. Annually presents a report on these activities to the Faculty Council and the Academic Council.

4. Obligation to conduct peer reviews of scientific works, articles, and other materials in accordance with established procedures.

5. Scientific research activities:

5.1. Every two years, publish at least three articles in a local refereed scientific journal/collection (at least one of which must be co-authored by the student(s));

5.2. Every two years, publish at least one scientific article in an international, highly rated refereed journal/collection (with the student(s) participation);

5.3. Every two years, participate in at least one international scientific forum (conference, symposium, workshop, scientific seminar, congress) as a speaker;

5.4 Within four years, publish at least two textbooks (including electronic textbooks), monographs, or collections;

5.5. Within four years, participate in an international scientific research project.

5.6. Within a four-year period, must participate in at least two grant projects (either in the preparation phase and/or as a participant in a winning project) in the capacity of a leader/manager/coordinator or as core staff (grant projects may also include scientific-infrastructure grants or other types), or must take part in at least two grant competitions announced by the Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation of Georgia (SRNSFG), where the submitted project, under their leadership/management or with their participation as core personnel, must have received no less than 80% of the maximum possible score.

The professor’s responsibilities include:

a) Supervising a maximum of three master’s and/or three doctoral students at any given time; 

b) Enhancing and developing the relevant educational program; 

c) Continuously updating the educational program(s) for the associated study courses;

d) Prepare and provide the necessary educational materials for implementing the relevant study course(s);

e) Identify internationally accredited programs related to the curriculum and develop specific proposals for obtaining international accreditation for those programs;

f) To plan and participate in various activities with students to achieve the educational goals set forth by existing legislation and regulations in higher education. These activities will help enhance students’ academic and cultural knowledge.

g) To encourage student involvement, including that of international students, in the university's educational, cultural, sports, and social activities. To this end, consistently plan a variety of work/cognitive activities for foreign students.

Professor’s Responsibilities

(Category ”B”)

1. Educational-pedagogical (lecture, practical, seminar, laboratory, course work, course project) workload - 10 hours per week, 260 hours per year;

2. Consulting obligation and provision-organization of practice provided for by the educational program;

3. Scientific research activities:

3.1. Every two years, publish at least two articles in a local refereed scientific journal/collection (at least one of which is co-authored by the student(s));

3.2. Every two years, publish at least one scientific article in an international, highly rated refereed journal/collection (with the student(s)’ participation));

3.3. Every two years, participate in at least one international scientific forum (conference, symposium, workshop, scientific seminar, congress) as a speaker;

3.4 Within four years, publish at least one textbook (including an electronic textbook), monograph or collection;

3.5. Within four years, participate in an international scientific research project.

3.6. Within a four-year period, must participate in at least two grant projects (either in the preparation phase and/or as a participant in a winning project); or must take part in at least two grant competitions announced by the Legal Entity of Public Law – Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation of Georgia, with the involvement of student(s).

3.7. Is obliged to conduct peer review of scientific papers, articles, and other academic materials in accordance with the established procedures.

The professor’s responsibilities also include:

a) Supervising a maximum of three master’s and/or three doctoral students at any given time;

b) Improving and development of the relevant educational program;

c) Continuously enhancing the educational program(s) for the corresponding study course(s);

d) Preparing and providing necessary educational materials for the implementation of the relevant study course(s);

e) Planning and participating in various activities with students to achieve the educational goals established by existing legislative and subordinate legal acts in higher education, which will help students acquire and enhance their academic and cultural knowledge.

Associate Professor’s Responsibilities

(Category “A”)

1. Educational-pedagogical (lecture, practical, seminar, laboratory, course work, course project) workload - 17 hours per week, 442 hours per year;

2. Consulting Obligations: provide consulting services and organize practice sessions as outlined in the educational program;

3. Must continuously ensure the ongoing monitoring and analysis of courses within the relevant subject group. Based on this analysis, must work to update and improve educational resources in a way that supports the enhancement of teaching and learning methods defined by the respective academic program and contributes to achieving the intended learning outcomes. An annual report on these activities must be submitted to the Faculty Council and the Academic Council.

4. Is obliged to carry out peer review of scientific papers, articles, and other academic materials in accordance with the established procedures.

5. Scientific research activities:

5.1. Every two years, publish at least three articles in a local refereed scientific journal/collection, , with at least one article co-authored by a student.

5.2. Every two years, publish at least one scientific article in a highly rated international refereed journal or collection;

5.3. Every two years, participate as a speaker in an international scientific forum, which may include conferences, symposiums, workshops, scientific seminars, or congresses.

5.4. Within four years, publish one textbook, monograph, or collection;

5.5. Within four years, participate in an international scientific research project.

5.6. Within four years, participate in at least two grant projects as a supervisor, manager, coordinator, or key personnel. This includes project preparation and/or involvement in a successful grant project. Grant projects may also encompass scientific-infrastructural grants or other types.

The responsibilities of an associate professor include the following:

a) Supervising master’s and/or doctoral students, typically limited to a maximum of two master’s and two doctoral students at any given time.

b) Improving and developing the relevant educational program.

c) Continuously enhancing the educational programs of the appropriate courses.

d) Preparing and providing the necessary educational materials to implement the relevant educational program(s). 

e) Planning and participating in various activities with students to achieve the educational goals established by current legislation and subordinate legal acts in higher education, which will help students acquire and enhance their academic and cultural knowledge.

Associate Professor’s Responsibilities

(Category “B”)

1. Teaching and pedagogical (lecture, practical, seminar, laboratory, course work, course project) workload - 15 hours per week, 390 hours per year;

2. Consulting obligations and ensuring/organizing the practice provided for by the educational program;

3. Scientific research activities:

3.1. Every two years, publish at least two articles in a local refereed scientific journal/collection (at least one of which is co-authored by the student(s);

3.2. Every two years, publish at least one scientific article in an international, highly rated refereed journal/collection (with the student(s) participation));

3.3. Every two years, participate in an international scientific forum (conference, symposium, workshop, scientific seminar, congress) as a speaker;

3.4 Within four years, publish one textbook, monograph, or collection;

3.5. Within four years, participate in an international scientific research project.

3.6. Within four years, participate in at least two grant projects (preparation of a project and/or participation in a winning project) (with the co-participation of the student(s));.

3.7. Is obliged to conduct peer review of scientific papers, articles, and other academic materials in accordance with the established procedures.

The responsibilities of an associate professor include:

a) Supervising master's and/or doctoral students, with a limit of no more than two master’s and/or two doctoral students at any given time. 

b) Enhancing and developing the relevant educational program. 

c) Continuously improving the educational program(s) for the relevant study course(s). 

d) Preparing and providing the necessary educational materials for implementing the academic program(s) of the relevant study course(s). 

e) Planning and participating in various activities with students to achieve educational goals established by existing legislation and subordinate legal acts in higher education, which will aid in enriching students' academic and cultural knowledge. 

Assistant Professor’s Responsibilities

1. Teaching and pedagogical (lecture, practical, seminar, laboratory, course work, course project) workload - 16 hours per week, 416 hours per year;

2. Consulting obligation and provision/participation in the practice provided for by the educational program;

3. Scientific research activities:

3.1. Every two years, publication of an article in a local refereed scientific journal/collection (at least one of which is co-authored by the student(s);

3.2. Within four years, publication of a scientific article in an international, highly rated refereed journal/collection;

3.3. Within four years, participation in an international scientific forum (conference, symposium, workshop, scientific seminar, congress) as a speaker;

3.4 Within four years participation in an international scientific research project.

The responsibilities of an assistant professor also include:

a) supervising a master’s student (as a rule, no more than 2 master’s students at a time);

b) improving and developing the relevant educational program;

c) continuously developing the educational program(s) of the relevant study course(s);

d) preparing/providing the necessary educational literature for the implementation of the educational program(s) of the relevant study course(s).
        
Assistant’s Responsibilities

1. Lecture hours 16 hours per week, 416 hours per year;

2. Administrative responsibility – provide consultation to students;

3. Scientific and research activities: participation in individual and collective international academic exchange project(s) and scientific activities of the university. Preparation of a report on the work performed at the end of each academic year.

4. Participation in the improvement and development of the relevant educational program;

5. Participation in the development of the educational program(s) of the relevant study course(s);

6. Create relevant learning resources.

7. Within a four-year period, must participate in at least two grant projects (either in the preparation phase and/or as a participant in a funded project). Additionally, must participate each year in at least two grant competitions announced by the Legal Entity of Public Law – Shota Rustaveli National Science Foundation of Georgia.

Note:

A different condition will be considered in the academic workload of all educational program heads, according to which their classroom workload, instead of 10 hours per week, will be determined by 8 hours for professors (“B” category), and instead of 15 hours - by 13 hours for associate professors (“B” category).

IV. Competition Documentation

1. Individuals wishing to participate in the competition must submit the following documents either in person or through a representative certified by a notary public:

a) A completed and signed application and questionnaire (available on the university website), along with documentation that verifies the information provided. This includes original copies of diplomas, certificates, deeds, references, etc.

b) A document verifying a scientific or academic degree (both original and copy) and/or proof of at least six years of relevant professional experience;

c) Documentation confirming scientific and pedagogical experience, certified with the official seal of the relevant organization or institution.

d) A list of scientific and educational works certified by the signature and seal of an authorized representative from the relevant institution or organization. Certification may also be provided by the signature of the head of the pertinent academic department at the university, along with the seal of that department or faculty.

e) An identity card (both the original and a photocopy).

f) Two photographs (size 3x4 cm).

g) A certificate of conviction for any crimes against sexual freedom and inviolability, as well as a certificate of deprivation of rights. The individuals who have previously submitted these certificates to the Human Capital Management Department of the university are not required to provide them again.

Note:

1. The application must be completed in one direction and for one specific position only. Candidates who submit applications for multiple positions will be disqualified from the selection process, as determined by the election commission.

2. Candidates who have studied abroad or obtained higher education overseas are required to provide documentation that confirms the recognition of their foreign qualifications. 

3. In addition to the documents mentioned above, candidates wishing to participate in the selection process must also submit:

A) For the position of professor:

a.a) Conceptual vision for future academic activity: This must include a vision for the development of at least one scientific project and a corresponding educational program, based on the principles of interdisciplinarity, transdisciplinarity, and internationalization. The concept must be designed for a minimum period of four years.

a.b) Results of scientific activities conducted in the past five years, which should include:

  • Participation in international and regional academic and scientific events (such as conferences, colloquiums, workshops, webinars, etc.);
  • Publications produced as a result of research conducted at the international and regional level (including books, collections, articles, etc.).
a.c) A particular article published in the past five years that he/she considers to be the best.

a.d) Any honorary doctorate received, along with other honorary diplomas and awards, if applicable.

b) For the Position of Associate Professor:

b.a) Conceptual vision for future academic activity and/or development of an educational program: The concept must integrate a vision for the development of an educational program and/or course in the relevant field, along with a scientific project or projects planned for a minimum duration of four years.

b.b) A summary of scientific activities conducted over the past five years, which should include:

  • Participation in international and regional academic and scientific events (such as conferences, colloquiums, workshops, webinars, etc.);
  • Publications resulting from research conducted at both the international and regional levels (including books, collections, articles, etc.).
b.c) A particular article published in the past five years that he/she considers to be the best

c) For the position of Assistant Professor:

c.a) One scientific project to be implemented within four years, which will be oriented, on the one hand, on its development and, on the other hand, will demonstrate the relevance and urgency of this project both for the university and for the field development;

c) Present one published article he/she considers to be the best.

d) For the Assistant position:

d.a) To present a scientific project proposal to be implemented within four years (the project may be individual or collaborative).

d.b) A document confirming your participation in any regional or international academic or exchange projects, if applicable.

d.c) Present one published article he/she considers to be the best.

3. To participate in the competition for an academic position in specific subject groups, candidates must provide a certificate or document that verifies their proficiency in a foreign language (English, French, German, or Russian) at a minimum B2 level. Alternatively, candidates can choose to take a relevant test at the university examination center. The competition commission will inform the candidate about the required level of knowledge for both the academic position and the foreign language.

V. Restrictions on Participants

1. A person whose holding of an academic position at a higher educational institution is restricted by applicable legislation will not be admitted to the competition.

2. A person who works at another higher educational institution and wins the competition at the university must sign an affiliation agreement with the university before signing an employment contract.

3. In the case of election to the position of Professor or Associate Professor (Category “A”), the individual is obliged to terminate any existing employment relationship with another employer within one month of signing the employment agreement with the Legal Entity of Public Law – Georgian Technical University, and must notify the relevant faculty administration in writing within no more than five (5) working days after the termination.
This requirement also applies to individuals already employed at the university in another position, except for those holding the roles of program coordinator of the relevant program at the faculty or head of the faculty’s academic department. Failure to comply will result in termination of employment at the university.

4. If a candidate is employed full-time at another institution and does not intend to change their employment status despite participating in the competition, they are only eligible to apply for a part-time position announced by the university.

VI. Competition Rules

1. The competition will be conducted by the Law of Georgia “On Higher Education,” the University Charter, and the Regulations governing the Hiring of Academic Personnel. Contestants should familiarize themselves with these documents, which are available on the university website and at the competition committees.

2. The Competition Commission will consider several factors when evaluating candidates. These factors include the relevance of each candidate’s qualifications and expertise to the position. This assessment will cover the candidate's scientific research, practical experience, educational methods, and teaching activities relevant to the position. Additionally, the commission will review achievements, qualifications, experiences, and merits of the candidates. The outcomes of the candidates’ lectures and/or interviews conducted by the commission will also be considered.

3. The results of the competition may be appealed in court, by applicable legislation.
