The Georgian Technical University Dedicated the Play “The Last Seagull” to the National Hero, Jiuli Shartava
“Jiuli Shartava is the beginning of a legend that will always live in future generations. It is impossible for Georgia ever to forget the sacrifice of Jiuli Shartava and Guram Gabeskiria, Vakhtang Gegelashvili, Raul Eshba, Mamia Alasania, Aleksandre Berulava and others who were shot with him. This play depicts the last, most difficult hours of the national hero, the famous graduate of the Georgian Technical University, and his comrades-in-arms devotion to their homeland. They were the “Last seagulls” in Sukhumi, surrounded by the enemy, and at the cost of their lives, they defended the territorial integrity of Georgia until their last breath,” said Rector, Academician David Gurgenidze, at the premiere of the dramatic performance “The Last Seagull”, staged by the GTU Public Theater-Studio “Modinakhe” based on the play by playwright Mikho Mosulishvili.

The student troupe of the Public Theater Studio “Modinakhe” and its artistic director, Nugzar Butskhrikidze, presented to the audience a one-act drama staged by the young director and actor Giorgi Chanturia. The drama vividly depicts one of the most tragic events in Georgia’s recent history, which took place on September 27th, 1993.

The premiere held at the Theater-Studio “Modinakhe”, was held with a full house, attended by the Rector of the Georgian Technical University, Academician David Gurgenidze, the Rector of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University, Academician Jaba Samushia, the university community, students, as well as representatives of Georgian scientific circles and the theater community.

After the performance, the Rector met with the artistic director and troupe of the University Theater Studio. Academician David Gurgenidze thanked the director and student actors, shared his impressions, and wished them success.

“I cannot hide my emotion, my deepest regret and, at the same time, my joy and amazement - the new play “Modinakhe”, an arduous and dramatic story told in it, the tragic events revived from the recent history of Georgia, which our generation knows so well, made an indelible impression. During the performance, I had the opportunity to observe the reactions of the audience, especially our young people - they deeply experienced and fully understood the essence of what is said in the play by playwright Mikho Mosulishvili and which the “Modinakhe” production was able to convey to the audience so skillfully.

The immortalized Jiuli Shartava is the beginning of a legend that will always live in our future generations. It is impossible for Georgia ever to forget the sacrifice of Jiuli Shartava and the martyrs Guram Gabeskiria, Vakhtang Gegelashvili, Raul Eshba, Mamia Alasania, Aleksandre Berulava, and others who were shot with him. This performance depicts the last, most difficult hours of the national hero, the famous graduate of the Georgian Technical University, and his comrades-in-arms devotion to their homeland. They were the “last seagulls” in Sukhumi, surrounded by the enemy and, at the cost of their lives, defended the territorial integrity of Georgia until their last breath.

It is especially difficult for our university community to talk without emotions about a person who spent an important stage of his youth at the Georgian Technical University and then, by the power of fate, became the first national hero of independent Georgia. His memory is immortalized in the university space in many ways and forever, and this wonderful performance is a clear confirmation of his immortality. We have repeatedly discussed what a performance about the life of a national hero should be like. The result exceeded expectations, for which I thank the entire troupe, our talented students, the young and promising director, Giorgi Chanturia, the legendary artistic director of “Modinakhe”, Mr. Nugzar Butskhrikidze, and everyone who spared no effort and created such a wonderful performance in the university space.

We believe that this performance will instill hope in our compatriots, and especially the younger generations, that through the selfless work and efforts of the Georgian state and government, education and science will always be at the service of the people, the occupied territories, Abkhazia and Samachablo will return to the Motherland in a peaceful and dignified way.

We hope that “The Last Seagull” will tour the whole of Georgia and leave no one indifferent. The life of the first national hero in the history of independent Georgia will become an example of how to love, serve, and be loyal to the homeland,” noted Rector David Gurgenidze.
