The Head of the Administration (Chancellor) of the Georgian Technical University, Professor Karlo Kopaliani, under the leadership of the Academician and the Rector, of the Academic Council of the GTU - David Gurgenidze, presented a report to the representatives of the Senate and Faculties of the Georgian Technical University.
The chancellor introduced to the present society the processes taking place at the Georgian Technical University during the past year 2023, as well as plans. He thanked the Academic Council of the GTU, the Rector, professors, and teachers for their support. He said that the university, under the leadership of Academician David Gurgenidze, is firmly determined to become the country’s leading university in the direction of innovation. Accordingly, it is of the utmost importance for him to implement the basic principles introduced by Europe’s innovative universities. The most important among them are the unity of teaching and research; the distribution of resources focused on results and opportunities, which will create additional motivation for study and opportunities for funding, both from domestic and internationally recognized donors, and the creation of a balanced governance structure.
“Striving for quality and constant search for improvement of management processes is not new. For the university, and as a free academic space, a necessary component is the unity of learning, teaching, and research, which implies the latest research results in studying and teaching, and student involvement in analyzing the research. It, in turn, will contribute to the fruitful use of scientific research results for public purposes and their adaptation for introduction into the curriculum. The 2023 budget served precisely these goals.
During 2022-2028, the development of the GTU strategy will be implemented in seven directions, which was already reflected in various programs of the 2023 consolidated budget of the university. It envisages a set of measures to be implemented to achieve the goals of the priorities defined by the strategic plan and includes the educational and scientific research units. University Development during 2022-2028, among the priorities defined by the strategy, has one of the most important places in the promoting internationalization, in which the Ministry of Education and Science of Georgia offers a great support. The university is working hard to achieve international ABET accreditation for its undergraduate STEM programs. It should be noted, that among the five undergraduate educational programs presented by the Georgian Technical University “Biomedical Engineering” was accredited by the ABET organization. The project for the accreditation of the rest of the programs will continue in 2024”, the Chancellor noted in his speech.
As the chancellor said, the university administration takes care of the improvement of the social conditions of the employees, and for this purpose, corporate insurance expenses were taken into account in the budget. The university’s goal is to ensure the development of students into competitive, highly qualified professionals and increase their involvement in scientific and research activities through the effective management of material, technical, and human resources. The promotion of excellent students is expressed in the provision of state or faculty scholarships and the establishment of benefits related to the payment of tuition fees. The department of student services, culture, and sports runs at the university. Its employees are actively involved in the organization and financing of extracurricular activities, constantly supervising and promoting sports and culture, establishing a healthy lifestyle among students and young people, and ensuring the identification of talented students and their participation in world and national universities. The program includes sub-programs and supports the participants in the mentioned events.
“During 2023, 23 new programs were accredited; 8 programs received a report about the recommendation implementation and the verification of accreditation conditions - 4 programs. The process includes the monitoring program sustainability and financial support, material-technical base, and library fund renewal, which the university successfully managed. The University Library is a member of the Integrated Information Network Consortium of Georgian Libraries, which in turn is a member of the international organization (Consortium of National Library Consortia) eIFL.net. The consortium allows libraries to access journals, e-books, and other databases of many world-renowned publishing houses at a discounted price via the Internet. During 2023, the university was actively involved in sports events organized by the university sports federation and also participated in the championships organized by national federations. In particular, in the 2023 Georgian National Volleyball Championship, the university’s boys’ volleyball team took first place, and in sand volleyball, the university’s girls’ and boys’ teams took first and third places. The university basketball team was undefeated in the student A league and participated in the Georgian National championship (basketball U 22). The university’s boys’ handball team successfully competed in the 34th Georgian National Handball Championship. During the last year, the sports Olympiad was held among the faculties in various sports.
To get to know better the regions of Georgia, excursions to different parts of the country are organized for both Georgian and foreign students, which helps to bring them closer together and, accordingly, to deepen internationalization. Students organize many interesting meetings, discussions, personal exhibitions in the university exhibition hall “Gallery” and so on,” said Carlo Kopalian.
