According to Vice-Rector Tamar Tsereteli, collaboration with a leading Austrian university in mining, geology, metallurgy, materials science, and energy is of great importance and interest for the Georgian Technical University in many ways in terms of training the next generation of researchers and specialists and conducting joint scientific research.

“We are pleased that the foundation for the partnership of the Georgian Technical University with one of the leading European universities - the Austrian University of Mining and Technology Leoben - is laid. We would like to convey the heartfelt and best wishes of the Rector, Academician David Gurgenidze, to the Austrian Ambassador to Georgia, His Excellency Robert Gerschner, the President of the Leoben University of Mining and Technology, Professor Peter Moser, and the Head of the International Relations Office of the Austrian University, Professor Riaz Kharat, as the Rector is currently on a working trip to the European Organization for Nuclear Research - CERN.

It is noteworthy that the University of Leoben is known for its academic programs in mining engineering and tunneling, occupational safety, oil and gas extraction, drilling technologies, materials science and metal processing, metallurgy, ceramics and polymers, environmental engineering, and industrial waste management. For the oldest and leading higher engineering, technical, and technological school in Georgia and the South Caucasus - the Georgian Technical University, collaboration with the Austrian university within the framework of the memorandum is important in training young highly professional specialists and researchers in these fields and implementing joint research projects. The great desire of the Georgian Technical University to establish a future relationship with the Leoben Mining University is strengthened by the fact that at the beginning of the last century, in Austria, young Grigol Tsulukidze was educated at this university - later a well-known scientist, the founder of the Georgian Mining Science School. He was the founder and first dean of the Mining Geology Faculty of the Georgian Technical University. We hope that the partnership between the Georgian Technical University and the Leoben Mining University of Austria will be fruitful in many ways for both institutions and will also strengthen relations between the youth of the two countries. We wish the friendly universities success!” Tamar Tsereteli noted.

As Austrian Ambassador to Georgia Robert Gerschner noted, the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding will be an important stimulus for strengthening cooperation between higher educational institutions of the two countries.

“I am pleased that the President of the Austrian University of Mining and Technology Leoben is visiting Georgia to deepen educational and scientific relations with the Georgian Technical University. As an ambassador, it is a great honor for me to attend the signing of this document at the Georgian Technical University. This will be an important stimulus for strengthening cooperation between the higher educational institutions of the two countries,” said Robert Gerschner.

According to the President of the Austrian University of Mining and Technology Leoben, the memorandum aims to conduct joint scientific work in the direction of sustainable development of mineral resources.

“The start of a partnership with the Georgian Technical University is an important moment for the University of Leoben. To this end, we have signed a memorandum of understanding. We are interested in collaboration in various international scientific programs, especially joint research work in the direction of strengthening the protection of mineral resources and their sustainable use. The memorandum also includes exchange programs for students, academic staff, and researchers, including within the framework of “Erasmus+”. We hope that the partnership with the Georgian Technical University will bring us tangible results,” stated Professor Peter Moser.

For information, the Austrian University of Mining and Technology Leoben is one of the leading specialized universities in Europe, competing with several well-known higher education institutions, including TU Bergakademie Freiberg (Germany), RWTH Aachen (Germany), Politecnico Di Torino (Italy), AGH University of Science and Technology (Poland) and actively participating in European innovation networks, such as EIT Raw Materials, which strengthens its academic, scientific and practical impact.
