Georgian Technical University Celebrates 103 Years Since Its Foundation
“103 years ago, on this day – January 16th – the first hearth of engineering education, the Georgian Polytechnic Institute, was founded, which was a great importance event not only in the history of university education in Georgia but also in the South Caucasus region. The first higher engineering and technological contributed colossally to the development of engineering, technical and technological science, and the training of national engineering personnel. I am sure that every January 16th, just like today, we, new generations of scientists, researchers, and students, will bow before the university and the great patriots - Ivane Javakhishvili, Aleksandre Didebulidze, Andria Razmadze, Niko and Giorgi Nikoladze, and many other world-class Georgian scientists whose contribution to the establishment and development of the Georgian Technical University is immeasurable,” said Academician David Gurgenidze, Rector of the Georgian Technical University, at an event dedicated to the 103rd anniversary of the university’s founding.

The event was attended by members of the GTU Academic Council and Senate, the Chancellor, the President of the Supervisory Board, vice-rectors, deans of faculties, heads of scientific research institutes, scientific-academic circles and students, as well as a member of the Holy Synod of the Georgian Orthodox Church, the Metropolitan of Manglisi and Tetritskaro, the Head of the GTU Theological Educational and Scientific Center, the Chairman of the Standing Commission for Establishing the Real History of the Patriarchate, Professor, His Eminence, Rev. Anania Japaridze.

According to the rector of the Georgian Technical University, Academician David Gurgenidze, in 1918, the country’s prominent scientists were able to open the first Georgian center of national education - Tbilisi State University, where on January 16th, 1922, the foundation was laid for the Polytechnic Faculty, which later became a university.

Thus, the Georgian Technical University became the first center of engineering education not only in Georgia but also in the South Caucasus region. Since its establishment, the university contributed colossally to the country’s reconstruction and economic development.

“In 2022, the international community, with the entire Georgian nation, celebrated the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Georgian Technical University. This was a remarkable event for the country and the whole region, more than a hundred high-ranking guests of honor, representing leading international organizations and universities, visited the Georgian Technical University. In recent history, the Georgian Technical University has always been an alma mater of highly qualified professionals who, with high-level knowledge and the use of the latest technologies, make a worthy contribution to the country’s economic development.

Georgian Technical University, one of the oldest and largest in the South Caucasus region, has leading scientists, specialists, successful young researchers, and motivated students in engineering, technology, and humanitarian fields. Our scientific and academic circles cooperate with such major international research organizations and centers as CERN in Switzerland, KEK and J-Parc in Japan, and FERMILAB in the USA, with which in 2024 we signed new memorandums of understanding of great importance for the university and the country, thus laying the foundation for qualitatively much broader and deeper scientific collaborations. It is noteworthy that as part of the events dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the European Organization for Nuclear Research, the newly elected President of the CERN Council, Professor Costas Fontas, and a representative delegation of CERN scientists paid a special visit to our university.

In addition, the Georgian Technical University hosted two of the most important scientific forums - the 35th International Hegel Anniversary Congress, in which about 300 famous foreign scientists and researchers participated, and the 25th International Conference on the Physics of Light-Matter Coupling in Nanostructures - PLMCN2024. We successfully cooperate with the Willich Center and the DAAD organization. We have close contacts with other leading universities in the United States, Germany, Italy, France, and other European countries. The Georgian Technical University is the first higher education institution in the region to be awarded the American International ABET accreditation for the English-language bachelor’s program in biomedical engineering.
“Multilateral international scientific collaborations are important for us, it is important to engage in student and academic staff exchange programs, new contacts, new projects, and new goals. All current efforts are aimed at the well-being of future generations. In 2022, when we celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Georgian Technical University, as part of the anniversary event, in the square adjacent to the administrative building, we placed a capsule for future students and teachers, which stores the most cherished desires, goals, and expectations. The future capsule will be opened by the future generation in 2072, on the 150th anniversary of the Georgian Technical University,” the rector noted in his speech.

Within the framework of the event dedicated to the 103rd anniversary of the founding of the Georgian Technical University, based on the decision of the Academic Council of the GTU, Rector Academician David Gurgenidze according to the decision of the Academic Council awarded the University’s “Gold Medal” to Zurab Chachkhian, Professor of the Faculty of Informatics and Control Systems of the GTU, and Isha (Koka) Kutubidze, the learned secretary of the Academic Council of the GTU, Professor of the Faculty of Engineering Economics, Media Technologies, and Social Sciences, for their special services to the Georgian Technical University. In addition, the famous writer and novelist, laureate of the Shota Rustaveli, Ilia Chavchavadze, Akaki Tsereteli, Davit Kldiashvili State Prizes, Cavalier of the “Order of Honor”, GTU Faculty of Law and International Relations Faculty Professor Revaz Mishveladze and Faculty of Architecture, Urban Planning and Design Professors Maia Davitaia and Maia Dzidziguri were awarded honorary university diplomas.

During the event, the actors of the University Public Theater-Studio “Modinakhes” troupe and the artistic director, director Nugzar Butskhrikidze presented an episode from the upcoming performance, which is dedicated to the history of the university’s founding. At the end of the event, the GTU Yuza Kublashvili Boys’ Public Chapel, conducted by the artistic director, Tsitsino Palavandishvili, performed two compositions.

For information, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of its founding, Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia Ilia II awarded the Georgian Technical University the highest award of the Georgian Orthodox Church – the Golden Order of St. George – for its outstanding contribution to the development of education and science and the revival of the country.
