The Day of the Faculty of Mining and Geology was celebrated at the Georgian Technical University.
The event was attended by the vice Rector of the Georgian Technical University - Professor Tamar Tsereteli, the President of the Supervisory Board - Professor Lavrenti Gudavadze, the university administration representatives, deans of faculties, professors and students, graduates of the faculty of Mining and Geology and guests.
The event was opened by the dean of the faculty of Mining and Geology - professor Anzor Abshilava. He reviewed the history of the faculty and talked about the successful projects that the faculty’s scientific employees and students implemented in the 2023-2024 academic year, and the plans for the new 2024-2025 academic year.
The Dean thanked the guests, as well as the GTU rector for establishing “Faculty Day” at the university, and thanked them for the support that David Gurgenidze showed to each faculty, scientist, and student.
“On the initiative of the rector of the Georgian Technical University, the foundation of a wonderful tradition was laid. Today is our day. In 1922, after the Polytechnic Faculty was established based on the decision of the Council of Professors of Tbilisi University, there were initially three departments at the Polytechnic Faculty: Construction, Mechanical and Ore Industry, that had specialties - Mining (operational), Metallurgical and Chemical-Technological. Since then, the Georgian Technical University, not only for our country, has been teaching highly qualified miners and geologists.
For many years, representatives of the mining and geological field and the private sector have openly talked about the lack of specialists, which is one of the most painful issues. However, the number of students enrolled at the Faculty of Mining and Geology through the National Exams of the 2024/25 academic year allows us to say that this problem has already been solved, for which I would like to thank the Rector, Academician David Gurgenidze for his support.
I want to thank the students, whose every successful step serves to raise the awareness of the country and the university house. Also, I would like to thank “RMG”, which actively supports the faculty within the framework of the memorandum of cooperation", said the dean.
As the vice-rector of GTU noted in her welcome speech, students at the Faculty of Mining and Geology have all the means to receive European standard education.
According to Professor Tamar Tsereteli, mining geology is one of the most difficult and necessary professions for the country’s reconstruction.
“Today we celebrate the day of the Faculty of Mining and Geology. The faculty, which is 102 years old as the Georgian Technical University. Mining-Geology is an industrial field with which the development and progress of the country are connected. This year the results of the Unified National Exams allow us to say that along with the field development, the interest among young people has increased.
The university with the great support of the rector, academician David Gurgenidze, improves the material and technical base every day, and the faculty infrastructure has been renewed. The university together with its partners, takes care of improving the educational process. I would like to thank the scientists working at the faculty, the deans’ office, students, partner organizations, especially “RMG” and wish them success”, said Tamar Tsereteli.
