At the Georgian Technical University, for the first time in the post-Soviet space, the 35th International Hegel Congress was opened, which is regularly held in different countries every two years under the auspices of the International Hegel Society.
This year, the International Congress of Hegel is a jubilee dedicated to the 70th anniversary of its foundation. Georgia is the first state, where after the collapse of the Soviet Union and gaining independence, the high-ranking world scientific forum is held, and the Georgian Technical University is the first host of the forum from Georgia.
The 35th International Hegel Congress, with the theme – “The Idea of Goodness and Morality in Hegel’s Philosophy”, is being organized by the International Hegel Society and the Faculty of Engineering Economics, Media Technologies and Social Sciences of the Georgian Technical University. The financial supporters of the scientific event are the International Hegel Society, various European and American scientific foundations, and the Government of Georgia.
The international congress, where about 250 eminent scientists and researchers of the international Hegel society and the worldwide classical German philosophy participate, was opened by the rector of the Georgian Technical University, academician David Gurgenidze. The rector welcomed the congress participants and guests and congratulated them on the anniversary of establishing the scientific forum.
As the rector noted in his speech, holding the International Hegel Congress in Georgia is unprecedented and resonant. It increases not only the prospects of internationalization of research but also the possibilities of integration of the host country and the university into the international scientific space.
“Georgian Technical University has the honor to host the 35th International Hegel Congress, an anniversary event dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the prestigious scientific forum establishment. It should be noted that Georgia is the first country in the post-Soviet space where the Hegel Congress is held. The decision to hold the congress in our country was made unanimously by the Scientific Council of the International Hegel Society, represented by leading scientists and professors of the Hegel Society and German classical philosophy from different countries. I attended the council meeting, which was held in September 2022, at the University of Zadar in Croatia, together with Professor Mamuka Beriashvili of our university, who is also a member of the Scientific Council of the International Hegel Society. You will agree that conducting a high-level scientific forum, along with scientific capabilities and hard work, also requires moral authority.
As proof of these words, it should be noted that the interest in German classical philosophy and in particular Hegel as a thinker has always been clearly expressed in the academic and scientific space of Georgia. Several famous Georgian philosophers studied in German universities on the teachings and opinions of Hegel, Kant, and other scientists.
They later became the founders of the Georgian university space - Shalva Nutsubidze, Mose Gogiberidze, Konstantine Bakradze, and many others. Human existence, creativity, the concept and conditions for the realization of freedom, the problems of the relationship between philosophy and theology, the creativity of thinking, the process of self-realization and cognition, and the issues of truth and cognition were the subject of constant judgment of Georgian scientists. We consider hosting the Congress in Georgia as one of the best opportunities to develop the rich Georgian scientific heritage and integrate it into the international space.
We welcome the congress participants, world-renowned scientists, guests, our university community, and students. Within the framework of this year’s congress, Hegel’s philosophy aspects will be discussed, which concern the theory of the state, the philosophy of subjectivity, the philosophy of religion and law, and the theory of recognition, which are represented in important modern social theories, whose famous authors are the main speakers of the congress.
We would like to thank the International Hegel Society, its president, Professor Miriam Gerhard, the honorary president and vice-president of the society, and the members of the society’s scientific council, for their support. We would like to thank the Government of Georgia, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, the Ministry of Education, Science and Youth, as well as the Ministry of Culture and Sports, for their unconditional effective support in the direction of deepening international scientific cooperation.
All this contributes to the generation of research ideas, and the formation of a free scientific community, and at the same time, it increases the opportunities of our young researchers at the Georgian Technical University in the international scientific space, creates a strong motivation for them to present the results of research to internationally recognized scientists and to continue working on projects in cooperation with them.
We congratulate all participants on the opening of the 35th International Hegel Congress and hope this is the beginning of our scientific collaboration.
We are sure that the days of the International Hegel Congress will be important and full of emotions - many interesting meetings will be held, we will establish new contacts with world-famous scientists and leading universities, make new plans, and lay the foundation for many new initiatives.
The Georgian Technical University is open to international collaboration and is fully ready to become an accountable actor in the global scientific space, which is the basis for the modern Georgian scientific and academic space development. Hosting the Hegel International Congress will greatly strengthen this perspective”, said academician David Gurgenidze.
President of the International Hegel Society, Professor Miriam Gerhard, Rector of Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University - academician Jaba Samushia, Honorary President of the International Hegel Society, Professor Andreas Arndt of the Berlin Humboldt University, Vice-President of the International Hegel Society, President of the International Academy of Philosophy, Professor Jure Zovko of the Zadar University, Professor Theo Kobusch of the Bonn Friedrich Wilhelm University, Chair of the Department of Comparative Literature at the University of California, Berkeley - Professor Niklaus Largier, Member of the Scientific Council of the International Hegel Society - Professor Brady Bowen, Dean of Engineering Economics, Media Technologies and Social Sciences of GTU - Professor Ivane Jagodnishvili, and Professor of the Georgian Technical University and a member of the Scientific Council of the International Hegel Society - Mamuka Beriashvili, addressed the participants of the congress with a welcome speech.
As Mamuka Beriashvili pointed out, Hegel’s legacy as a philosopher and thinker, with its wide range of thought systems, actuality, relevance, and value, is invaluable for creating new knowledge and permeates not only humanities but also political and social sciences.
“The proof of the mentioned is even the “Idea of Goodness” and the “Social Theory of Recognition”, which directly derives from Hegel’s philosophy of law and is still used as a theoretical framework for the analysis of social events - in the context of social equality, social justice and the political implementation of freedom. In addition, these theories permeate such key challenges as artificial intelligence, ecology, environmental ethics, bioethics, and others.
It is significant that one of this year’s congress sections also include the study of Hegel outside of Germany. From this point of view, it is notable that Hegel’s works and German idealism are also studied by the Georgian Technical University scientists in cooperation with foreign colleagues. We hope that our university will contribute both Georgian and international scientific spaces”, noted Mamuka Beriashvili.
The 35th Hegel International Congress will be held for 5 days, including October 5th, in 8 sections: goodness and morality; logical, religious-philosophical, and theoretical dimensions of the state; goodness and morality in Hegel’s philosophy of soul and philosophy of nature; recognition as a principle of freedom implementation; Subject as a logical concept: consequences for the state and society; Goodness and Morality from a Philosophical Perspective of Law; War and the principle of international relations in Hegel’s “Philosophy of Law”; Reception of Hegel's philosophy in Georgia and outside Germany; Nature VS Culture in the context of the idea of goodness. The congress materials will be published in Hegel’s yearbook - Hegel-Jahrbuch.
Within the framework of the congress, cultural events are also planned, which will take place in the GTU administrative building, on the stage of the Ivane Javakhishvili hall. Today, a concert of the student artistic groups of the Georgian Technical University will be held especially for the congress participants and guests.
The program will present works of jazz, folk, and pop art; On October 3rd, there will be a musical performance by pianist Professor Vladimir Stupel – on “Morality in Music", where he will present a French-German program with works by Robert Schumann, Johannes Brahms and Paul Dukas, and talk about the relationship between music and philosophy.
