On the initiative and organization of the Chairman of the Permanent Conference of Rectors of Higher Educational Institutions of Georgia, the rector of the Georgian Technical University, Academician Davit Gurgenidze, the members of the Permanent Conference of Rectors honored the memory of the heroes who died in the August War.
The members of the Permanent Conference of Rectors, professors, and students of accredited universities in Georgia laid wreaths of flowers in the Mukhatgvedi Brothers’ cemetery in Tbilisi and the existing memorials in the cities - Gori, Batumi, Kutaisi, Zugdidi, Akhaltsikhe, in honor of the heroes who died in the August war, and the representatives of Jacob Gogebashvili Telavi State University decorated the Georgian national hero Giorgi Ankshelidze’s memorial with flowers in the village - Kvemo Alvani.
According to the rector of the Georgian Technical University and the chairman of the Permanent Conference of Rectors of higher educational institutions, the memory of the heroes who died in the fight for the unity and freedom of the motherland inspires love and dedication to the country.
As academician Davit Gurgenidze noted, from 2012 until now, the Georgian government has used all available legal means to prove the occupation with facts before the International Community while at the same time protecting peace, which is the foundation of the country’s development.
“We bow before the brave men who heroically died for the freedom and sovereignty of the motherland. 16 years have passed since one of the most tragic and pain-filled days in the recent history of Georgia, and the worst consequences of the August war - dead, wounded, exiled Georgian citizens - have been indelibly imprinted in our memory. Temporarily occupied 189 villages, where the traces of human life have been erased and the inhabitants have turned into the forests.
Unfortunately, the history of our country does not include only the tragedy of the August war. Russian occupation dates back many decades, and the generations sacrificed themselves heroically in the process.
The symbol of these battles, the national hero, Giorgi Antsukhelidze, would have turned 40 years old in a few days. In the August War, brave men who fought for the homeland died heroically, among whom were graduates of the Georgian Technical University. The history of Georgia will keep them in memory forever.
Glory to the heroes! To immortalize their names, we continue to develop, study, and raise new generations with the hope that we will regain the lost territories soon”, proclaimed Davit Gurgenidze.
