Rector of the Georgian Technical University, academician Davit Gurgenidze, students, professors, and administration staff met with the national football team member, the participant of UEFA Euro 2024, Giorgi Gvelesiani.
The meeting with the national football team member, which took place in the administrative campus of the university, in “Giorgi Nikoladze Hall”, was held against the background of hearty ovations. The meeting with the athlete was organized by the administration of the Georgian Technical University, “Niko Nikoladze”, “Michel Mouskhely” and “Nodar Tabidze” university student clubs.
The interactive meeting was moderated by the chancellor of the university, Professor Karlo Kopaliani, and the Rector’s adviser Davit Okitashvili. The meeting was attended by the Vice-Rector, Associate Professor Tamar Tsereteli, and Deputy Rector in the field of Science, Professor Tamar Lominadze.
As the rector, academician Davit Gurgenidze noted during the meeting with the national team member, for the first time in the history of independent Georgia, the successful performance of the national football team at Euro 2024 united the country into one fist and under the common belief of the long-awaited victory.
"The greatest victory of the national team brought us immeasurable joy and belief that another worthy victory is inevitable. The success of our players has convinced us that great goals can be achieved with dedicated work, order, peace, and unity. Our university community and students wish the heroic footballers, national team coaches, football federation, and all fans new victories. The World Championship is ahead, the future European Championship is ahead, and we are sure that many more victories await the Georgian national team”, said Davit Gurgenidze.
Giorgi Gvelesiani, a member of the Georgian national football team, spoke to the audience about the 2024 European Football Championship, the plans and mood of the national team, the justification of the future expectations of the fans, the growing trends of football development in the country and the prospects of the national team, his formula for success and interesting sports topics.
“First of all, thank you very much for the epithets full of love and the tireless support of the national football team - we will always try to live up to your expectations. At one time, I was also a student, but unfortunately, I could not finish my studies because it was impossible to be a good athlete and a good lawyer at the same time. There were many disappointments and difficulties. However, I never gave up and continued to follow my chosen path. My wife made a big contribution to my success. The same can be said about the other members of the team. Football is a large-scale sport that can evoke large-scale emotions, including relieving tension and restoring a sense of togetherness. Every person desires to live in a strong and developed country, but for that, only the desire is not enough, it also requires tireless work. Any work a person takes up, should be done with a great attitude and motivation, show perseverance to achieve the set goal, and contribute to the country’s development. Great goals cannot be achieved otherwise. We believe that each of us is driven by great goals that guarantee the development of our country. Georgia’s path is to Europe, and our common motivation is to move towards Europe”, Giorgi Gvelesiani said at the meeting.
To the student’s question, what is the main reason for the success of the Georgian football team - Giorgi Gvelesian answered that it is a united spirit, discipline, hard work, honesty, and mutual respect.
“The national team is our big family, where together with players and coaches, everyone has their function and responsibility. Success depends on each of them. A generation has arrived with a sense of discipline, hard work, talent, and motivation. Our success will be contagious. The young generation wears the national team uniforms and a great future is ahead of them”, said the football player.
To the student’s question about what is the main motivation that will lead to the set goal, a member of the national football team gave the following definition: “First of all, you should know exactly what you want to achieve, where you imagine yourself - it doesn’t matter if it is geodesy, sports, construction, architecture or energy, everything needs much enthusiasm to help you be the best at what you do.”
Giorgi Gvelesian also spoke about his career in Iranian football clubs and noted that he has acquired many fans in the country. When asked if he has relations with Georgians from Fereydan, the football player said: “When I arrive in Ispahan, the first thing I do is meet Georgians from Fereydan”. I have always been interested in their life, how they speak, how they carefully preserved their native language and customs for 5 centuries, I wonder what difficulties they face, etc. Today, I have many Fereydan friends. Imagine when you play football in Iran – a country with a population of 88 million, people in a stadium filled with 80,000 people, and at that time, the Georgian flag is fluttering in the stadium - this is an incredible emotion, a great joy that I’m sharing with you now.”
Regarding the national team of Georgia, Giorgi Gvelesiani said it has great potential.
“As for plans, both victory and defeat are inevitable. All of us have to come to terms with this. The main thing is to develop a winner’s mentality, which did not exist before, and now it exists. I believe that the Georgian national team has great potential, it is balanced with young and experienced players, and we have experienced coaches, which will inevitably lead us to another victory. If we can compete in the World Championship in 2 years, it will probably be strenuous for us to carry this happy emotion together,” said the national team member.
The chancellor of the Georgian Technical University, Professor Carlo Kopaliani, thanked Giorgi Gvelesiani and the national football team for the successful competition. As he noted, the national football team broke the stereotype in society and strengthened the belief in the victory of Georgia.
“You did the most significant, broke the stereotype, and we all believed together in victory - that victory is possible, and we deserve it. We know that it is the result of your hard work, but nothing can be achieved without hard work in any field. We are already in the mood for another victory. The Paris International Olympics and the World Football Championship are ahead, and we believe many successes await Georgia”, said Karlo Kopaliani.
At the end of the meeting, the students and professors of the Georgian Technical University thanked the football player and the national football team for the great joy they gave to Georgia. Young people took Giorgi Gvelesiani’s autographs and commemorative photos with him.
