According to the rector of the Georgian Technical University, academician David Gurgenidze, based on the memorandum of understanding, the partnership with San Diego State University has become fruitful, large-scale, and bringing many successes to students.
The rector thanked the governments of Georgia and the United States of America, the Millennium Challenge Corporation, SDSU, and SDSU-GEORGIA for their support and drew attention to the current processes in the direction of obtaining ABET-accreditation at the Georgian Technical University.
As the rector noted, within the partnership framework between the Georgian government and San Diego State University-Georgia, SDSU-GEORGIA offers students high-quality American undergraduate programs in STEM fields accredited by the American Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).
The mentioned programs are successfully implemented in cooperation with several state higher education institutions of Georgia, including the GTU, and the interest of young people in these programs is growing sharply annually.
“San Diego State University has been successfully cooperating with the Georgian educational system for more than 10 years.
It is worth noting the extremely fruitful partnership with the GTU, which has brought us several important results and implemented projects. The collaboration program with the American university occupies an important place in US-Georgia relations, and our youth have the opportunity to receive an American education in their homeland. When we talk about the results, first of all, we should mention that the English-language program of Biomedical Engineering of the Faculty of Informatics and Management Systems of GTU has gained international ABET accreditation - this is a significant step towards success. We continue to work tirelessly in the direction to obtain ABET accreditation and are preparing 6 more educational programs. We are sure that we will achieve new successes in this direction, which will bring more tangible results to our university and its students, the young researchers, in the direction of internationalization of teaching and research. Of course, the effective operation of the Memorandum of Mutual Understanding has a significant impact on this process, and the efforts of the SDSU academic staff, the great merit of Professor Halil Guven and his wife Oya Atakan, the personal support of the President, Professor Adela de la Torre and the Vice Presidents, for what we want to thank them. It is worth noting that the Government of Georgia, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, Minister of Education, Science and Youth Giorgi Amilakhvari, and Deputy Minister Nodar Papukashvili make an effective contribution to the management of all these processes - it is with their direct involvement that STEM educational programs develop and strengthen in the country. In our case, the ongoing processes at the university involve not only the support of programs submitted for international accreditation but also, in general, the development of STEM disciplines, the strengthening of the positions of the Georgian Technical University in the international space, the increase of opportunities for students to study on programs with double diplomas and international accreditation, thus their future is guaranteed to improve”, noted the rector David Gurgenidze.
The Vice Presidents of San Diego State University thanked the rector of the Georgian Technical University for the warm welcome, and they noted that they are actively and interestedly following the events taking place at the university in the direction of obtaining ABET accreditation and, in turn, spare no effort to support the Georgian University and its students in the process of internationalization.
As they mentioned, from the point of view of effectiveness, there are many positive changes at the GTU, which, along with the selfless work of Georgian colleagues, the contribution of the rector himself, academician David Gurgenidze, is great.
At the end of the meeting, they expressed their belief that the progressive collaboration would bring great success not only to the Georgian Technical University but also to Georgia.
After the meeting with the rector, the San Diego State University delegation met with the deans of the faculties and heads of the administrative units of the Georgian Technical University.
