Georgian Technical University Celebrated Its 104th Anniversary With Giorgi Nikoladze’s Monument Unveiling in a Newly Built Garden
“The 104-year history of the Georgian Technical University clearly reflects the continuous educational process that has determined the role of our higher school in the development of the country’s scientific and technological directions. Since its foundation, the university has been based on academic traditions, promoting the development of engineering thought and technological knowledge, actively supporting the expansion of scientific research, and training of highly qualified personnel. The academic activities of the Georgian Technical University include both theoretical training and practical research, which are integrated with regulatory standards and international experience. The university remains a vital component of the country’s technological advancements, innovative research, and professional education. Our primary goal is to integrate traditional practices with modern technologies, conduct innovative research, and educate professionals who meet international standards. New research infrastructure and modern laboratories, including the Straw Laboratory, an innovation that was introduced within the walls of our university and was implemented for the first time not only in Georgia, but also worldwide, are of great importance both from a scientific and national point of view and create a solid foundation for deepening international scientific cooperation”, said Academician David Gurgenidze, Rector of the Georgian Technical University, at an event dedicated to the 104th anniversary of the GTU founding.

The event dedicated to the 104th anniversary of the GTU was attended by the Minister of Education, Science, and Youth of Georgia Givi Mikanadze, Deputy Minister Zviad Gabisonia, Senior Professor of the Department of Science Development Ketevan Kokrashvili, President of the Georgian National Academy of Sciences, Academician Roin Metreveli, Vice-Mayor of Tbilisi Giorgi Tkemaladze, members of the Parliament of Georgia and Tbilisi City Council, Metropolitan of Manglisi and Tetritskaro, His Holiness Anania, His Holiness Abba Alaverdeli, Metropolitan David, Bishop of the Margveti and Ubisi Diocese, His Holiness Melkisedegi, Administrator of the Surami and Khashuri Diocese, High Priest, Bishop, His Holiness Svimon, university community, students, representatives of academic circles and other guests, representatives of Georgian science and technical thought The opening ceremony of the monument to one of the outstanding representatives - Giorgi Nikoladze and the first Georgian space object - the retractable reflector memorial sculpture began with a solemn ceremony.

The monument of Giorgi Nikoladze and the memorial sculpture of the Georgian space object were opened by the Rector, Academician David Gurgenidze, and the Minister of Education, Science, and Youth, Givi Mikanadze, in the newly built garden of the Georgian Technical University.

The GTU Rector thanked the author of the Giorgi Nikoladze’s monument - the famous scientist and public figure, mathematician, metallurgist, terminologist, inventor, and athlete (gymnast and mountaineer) - the sculptor Irakli Revazishvili, the authors of the architectural part - professors of the Georgian Technical University - Gogi Salukvadze and Rati Meparidze, and the constructor Levan Zambakhidze for creating a realistic monument. As Academician David Gurgenidze stated, the Georgian Technical University continues the traditions and immortalizes the name of the famous patriot, which is confirmed by the existence of the Giorgi Nikoladze Medal, which the university awards to employees for long-term, fruitful educational, scientific, and public activities by decision of the Academic Council. The university also revived Giorgi Nikoladze’s unique invention – “The Direct Multiplication and Division Electric Arithmetic”, which actually laid the foundation for informatics and computing in Georgia.

“It is no coincidence that today we began our solemn event with the unveiling of the Giorgi Nikoladze’s monument and the memorial sculpture of the first Georgian space object. Giorgi Nikoladze is one of the important figures of Georgian technical thought and scientific creativity, whose work laid the foundation for the development of modern technical education and engineering research in Georgia. The first Georgian space object, the general designer of which is Academician, Major General Elguja Medzmariashvili, is still considered one of the successful projects in independent satellite orbit. Today we have a busy schedule. Guests will have the opportunity to visit the recently opened, unique Straw Laboratory, where scientists from the Scientific Research Institute of Quantum Physics and Engineering Technologies of the Georgian Technical University will manufacture Straw Track Tubes for the first time in the world using the latest technologies. I would like to emphasize that the university would not have achieved such great success without the support of the Georgian government, Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, and the Minister of Education, Science, and Youth of Georgia, Givi Mikanadze. With the initiatives and financial support of the government and the ministry, a solid foundation has been created for the development of modern laboratories and infrastructure, which allows us to ensure a high standard of technical education and the active participation of our scientists in the international scientific space. Today, when the world is in the era of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, our priority is the internationalization of educational programs and the creation of an environment for students where theoretical knowledge and practical research are combined. We are proud of our professors and teachers and those students who will ensure the economic strength and technological sovereignty of the country tomorrow. I congratulate the large family of the Georgian Technical University on the 104th anniversary of the university’s foundation. I wish all of you success”, said David Gurgenidze in his speech.
