The 45th anniversary of the establishment of the Professor Viktor Eristavi’s Department of Environmental Engineering and Ecology at the Georgian Technical University was celebrated with a workshop. The event was held at the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Chemical Technologies and was dedicated to modern practices in industrial waste management.
Students, university researchers and professors, experts in the field, industry representatives, and specialists participated in the workshop. The event was supported by the companies RMG and WasteLess.
The Dean of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Chemical Technologies opened the workshop. On behalf of the Rector of the Georgian Technical University, Academician David Gurgenidze, she thanked the academic staff and scientists of the Professor Viktor Eristavi’s Department of Environmental Engineering and Ecology for their significant contributions to the education of environmentalists and the implementation of research in the field of environmental protection over the decades.
In her speech, Professor Liana Targamadze focused on the global and regional environmental challenges facing the modern world, including the importance of industrial waste management, sustainable use of natural resources, and protection of ecosystems.
According to her, in the conditions of climate change and industrial development, special importance is attached to the training of highly qualified environmental engineers in accordance with modern requirements. As Liana Targamadze noted, the Department of Environmental Engineering and Ecology has been playing an important role in this direction for 45 years: it combines education, research, and practice, and trains professionals who actively participate in environmental protection and sustainable development processes both in Georgia and abroad.
Within the framework of the workshop, public lectures on modern waste management were held for students by professionals in the field. Konstantine Khachapuridze, RMG Environmental Manager, spoke about current approaches to waste management, and Giorgi Guliashvili, Founder and Director of WasteLess, discussed important issues of specific waste management.
The Head of the Department of Environmental Engineering and Ecology of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Chemical Technologies delivered a concluding speech to the workshop participants. Professor Dimitri Eristavi thanked the Rector and the administration of the Georgian Technical University for supporting the event dedicated to the 45th anniversary of the department’s establishment and noted that such initiatives contribute to deepening the connection between academic and professional spaces.
The professor emphasized the importance of close cooperation with partner organizations in terms of both improving the quality of education and developing applied research, and also spoke about the main directions of future joint projects, innovative research, and expanding practical experience for students.
As part of the workshop “Modern Practice of Industrial Waste Management”, a special tour was organized for the students participating in the event on the RMG territory, during which the company’s specialists introduced the youth to methods of managing industrial and hazardous waste generated as a result of production processes.
