The GTU championship in seven-men rugby was held at the Georgian Technical University, where the team of the Faculty of Mining Geology and Sustainable Mountain Development won an unconditional victory and the university gold cup.
Representatives of the Georgian Technical University administration, deans of the relevant faculties, professors, and teachers and students supported the seven-men rugby teams of six faculties of GTU competing in the university championship at the GTU/Wrestler Stadium.
The winning rugby team in the university championship was presented with the GTU gold cup by the Head of the Department of Student Services, Culture and Sports Levan Pipia, the President of the University Student Self-Government Davit Leshkasheli and the Head of the Sports Department Achil Ioseliani.
As the head of the GTU sports department notes, it is gratifying that after a certain pause, the seven-men rugby tournament has successfully returned to the university space. According to Archil Ioseliani, for the second year in a row, the Faculty of Mining Geology and Sustainable Mountain Development has been the unconditional leader in seven-men rugby and the holder of the university cup.
“It is especially gratifying that with the support of the rector, academician David Gurgenidze, seven-men rugby has returned to the university space for the second year, and the tradition of holding tournaments has been revived. This strengthens the students’ team spirit, especially since the popularization of rugby in our country began precisely from the Georgian Technical University. Famous rugby players who mastered the university club later played for the Georgian national team, won, and delighted the fans.
This year, the participating teams demonstrated their determination, strategic calculations, and teamwork skills at a high level. The team from the Faculty of Mining Geology and Sustainable Mountain Development was particularly impressive, which ultimately won the university cup. We are sure that such events contribute to the development of mutual respect and responsibility among students and, most importantly, the revival of university traditions,” says Archil Ioseliani.
