The Georgian Technical University, within the framework of a grant project of the Competitive Innovation Fund (CIF), in partnership with the University of Milan, continues to work on the creation of a joint master’s educational program in sustainable mountain development.
The development of a joint English-language master’s program will contribute to the training of highly qualified young specialists and researchers in the field of mountain research and sustainable development, the expansion of the international experience of students from both countries, as well as the deepening of scientific and academic cooperation between the Georgian Technical University and the University of Milan.
The working meetings, hosted by the University of Milan at this stage, were attended by the Acting Dean of the Faculty of Mining Geology and Sustainable Mountain Development, Professor Noe Khozrevanidze, the Head of the Quality Assurance Service of the same faculty, Professor Tamar Koblianidze, and the Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Chemical Technologies, Professor Giorgi Chichinadze, from the Georgian Technical University.
According to Professor Noe Khozrevanidze, during the working meetings, the parties exchanged views on the model of the joint master’s program and discussed future cooperation mechanisms. They also discussed the goals of the CIF grant project and its sustainability issues. According to him, in order to present information about the work carried out within the framework of the project and future plans, the professors of the Georgian Technical University met with the Head of the UNIMONT Research Center of the University of Milan, Professor Anna Giorgi, the Head of the Department of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, Professor Riccardo Giugetti, and the academic staff. As Noe Khozrevanidze notes, the meetings were facilitated by Stefano Corsi, Associate Professor of the Department of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences of the University of Milan.
According to the head of the Faculty of Mining Geology and Sustainable Mountain Development, with the support of Italian colleagues, a meeting was held with the head of the Department of Earth Sciences, Professor Lucia Angiolini, with whom the issues of the development of the mining and geological direction and its internationalization were discussed. In addition, online meetings were held with the leadership of the European Mountain Research Network (NEMOR) and the European Mountain Regions Association EUROMONTANA, during which practical issues related to the Georgian Technical University’s membership in these organizations were discussed.
As Professor Giorgi Chichinadze notes, the working meetings at the University of Milan were also important for the future development of the Bachelor’s and Master’s programs in Viticulture and Enology of the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Chemical Technologies of the Georgian Technical University. According to Giorgi Chichinadze, the parties discussed in detail the possibilities of launching a double-degree program at the University of Milan for students of the Georgian Technical University’s Viticulture and Enology department.
According to Professor Tamar Koblianidze, within the framework of the visit, professors from the Georgian Technical University held public lectures in Edolo for students of UNIMONT’s Bachelor’s and Master’s programs. Tamar Koblianidze says that students from the University of Milan were particularly interested in the prospect of mobility at the Georgian Technical University; therefore, GTU representatives introduced the young people to the Georgian Technical University’s educational programs, research infrastructure, and the opportunities that international students enjoy at the GTU.
As GTU representatives note, visits to recreational and research spaces located in the mountainous regions of Italy are of particular practical importance for the process of developing a joint master’s program in sustainable mountain development: in the mountainous municipality of Livigno, they visited the Milano-Cortina 2026 Olympic facilities and got acquainted with the activities of the company “Mottolino”, which is responsible for arranging the Olympic infrastructure; they visited the Trento Science Museum (MUSE), and within the framework of a meeting with the museum administration, they discussed the possibility of developing museums operating at the Faculty of Mining Geology and Sustainable Mountain Development and the development of joint educational formats on their basis; They got acquainted with small enterprises based in the mountainous regions of Italy that closely cooperate with the UNIMONT research center of the University of Milan, and in their activities they use innovative knowledge and practical models created in partnership with the university.
