The Rector of the Georgian Technical University, Academician David Gurgenidze, met with the Chairman of the Georgian National Energy and Water Regulatory Commission (GNERC), Professor David Narmania, and with Ekaterine Beridze, Communications Director, and Giga Nadiradze, Technical Director, of one of the leading companies in the Georgian water supply market - “Georgian Water and Power” (GWP), and discussed with them the development opportunities of the water supply and wastewater sector, the prospects for training young personnel, and specific directions of future cooperation.
At the working meeting, which was attended by the Chancellor of the University, Professor Carlo Kopaliani, Vice-Rector Professor Tamar Tsereteli, Dean of the Faculty of Construction, Professor Zurab Gvishiani, Dean of the Faculty of Energy, Professor Ketevan Kutateladze, and Dean of the Faculty of Chemical Technology and Metallurgy, Professor Liana Targamadze, the parties also discussed the expansion of cooperation. They agreed on the details of future cooperation.
As the Rector, Academician David Gurgenidze noted, the Georgian Technical University is ready to engage in the development of the water supply and wastewater sector, which is one of the priorities of the country’s infrastructural development.
The Rector emphasized the importance of training young professionals in the fields of water supply and related engineering disciplines. He also highlighted the significance of ongoing scientific research in the water supply sector, which is crucial for the effective operation of the country’s water supply and sewage systems.
According to the Rector, the company “GWP”, managed by the Spanish firm Aqualia one of the largest representatives in the European water supply market—wants to involve students from the university’s construction, energy, chemical technology, and environmental engineering programs in its activities. This initiative will focus on training young people and integrating them into the company’s operations.
As Academician David Gurgenidze noted, the Georgian National Energy and Water Regulatory Commission, along with its Chairman David Narmania, supports the strengthening of collaboration between the university and this major company in the water supply and sewage sector. The Rector mentioned that many successful engineering students at the Georgian Technical University would benefit from internships at “GWP”, providing them with additional motivation and the potential for future employment.
“Georgian Technical University is ready to actively engage in the development of the water supply and wastewater sector, which is one of the main priorities of our country. It’s significant for the GTU to have close ties with both regulatory bodies and industry representatives, so that together we can create an educational and practical space that will enable future specialists and researchers to respond to real challenges.
Students must develop practical skills in a real working environment along with theoretical knowledge. That is why the Georgian Technical University is committed to establishing partnerships with industries and, with their support, creating a modern educational and research infrastructure. I am glad that together with the Chairman of the Georgian National Energy and Water Regulatory Commission and representatives of the “GWP” company, we talked not only about deepening cooperation, but also about specific steps - about modern infrastructure, modernization of educational and research laboratories, as well as the creation of new laboratories at the faculties of construction, energy, chemical technology and metallurgy. It is noteworthy that “GWP”, as well as other large companies, such as “RMG”, “Tegeta Motors”, large companies operating in the field of biomedical engineering, express their desire to participate in the development of the university laboratory base. Modernization of the infrastructure not only creates a valuable learning environment for students but also strengthens the educational and research potential of the Georgian Technical University. Our goal is for students to master theoretical knowledge at the Georgian Technical University, and actively engage in research activities, work on real projects in various companies, and share professional experience from their student years. This is one of the priorities of the university, which is the basis for improving the practical skills of students and, among other things, training highly qualified personnel in the water supply and sewage sector,” noted David Gurgenidze.
At the end of the meeting, the parties agreed to jointly prepare a draft memorandum of trilateral cooperation. The document will be signed by the Rector of the Georgian Technical University, the Chairman of the Georgian National Energy and Water Regulatory Commission (GNERC), and the management of the company “GWP” shortly.
