Fashion Design Technology Program Student Thesis Defense-Exhibition at GTU

The bachelor’s thesis defense show for fourth-year students in the “Fashion Design Technologies” of the Academic Department of Fundamentals of Architecture, Theory and Fine Arts program of the GTU Faculty of Architecture, Urban Planning and Design was held at the Georgian Technical University.

During the defense show, students presented their work in the form of portfolios and capsule collections, showcasing a total of five outfits made from various materials.

Professor Lia Lursmanashvili, the head of the Fashion Design Technologies program, noted that the students demonstrated their conceptual and technological visions of modern fashion design. Each project reflected the students’ individual styles as well as interpretations based on current trends.

According to the program manager, this year’s graduates showcased capsule collections characterized by a diverse blend of fabrics, innovative silhouette designs, and a commitment to sustainable fashion principles.

“The works highlight the high professional standards achieved by our students, particularly this year’s graduates, within the bachelor’s program. Each project demonstrates their ability to independently plan and execute a comprehensive design project—from concept development to practical implementation. The graduating students effectively presented their unique styles in the context of modern fashion, demonstrating both creative thinking and the capacity to integrate into a professional environment,” stated Lia Lursmanashvili.

Graduates from the bachelor’s program in Fashion Design Technologies emphasized that they sought to clearly showcase their professional readiness and distinct individual visions. They expressed that their capsule collections were inspired by a mix of experiences, ideas, and impressions gathered during their educational journey.

One of the graduates, Teo Inasaridze, explains that her collection is inspired by the five elements that create both physical and spiritual balance. It combines natural organic forms with a modern technological vision. Each element reflects the inner state of a person, their ability to adapt, and their connection to nature, with patterns reinterpreted through color, shape, texture, and movement. Diana Bashidze describes her collection as an observation of the environment, capturing its structures, textures, and layers. She focuses on natural materials and handcrafted details, which lend each piece a unique identity. Her work creates a space where rigor and tenderness coexist harmoniously. Nanuka Tadumadze draws inspiration from the free spirit of cowboys, the strength of the Wild West, and the natural essence of boho style, which resonates with those around her. Her collection embodies ideals of individualism, adventure, and freedom, expressed through modern interpretations of form and texture.

Nini Turashvili discusses Edward Lorenzo’s concept of the butterfly effect, emphasizing that minor events can lead to significant changes. Her collection, titled “Butterfly Effect”, is inspired by this idea. Salome Turkadze draws inspiration from the desert mirage effect in her artworks. She aims to capture the essence of the desert, which, despite its emptiness, is full of depth and life. Her personal journey transforms the desert into a symbol of simplicity and peace. Ana Bolkvadze dedicated her clothing collection to her mother. She explains that her work does not seek to revisit the past but rather to embody the light, clarity, and love she received from her mother. The defense show was a crucial milestone for her, requiring dedication and professionalism. The positive outcome motivated her to pursue further studies and work in the fashion industry, including on an international scale. Keti Gogichaishvili used the symbolism of the planet Saturn, exploring its physical and mythological aspects as the central theme of her collection. She describes Saturn, as an astrological symbol, as embodying both strength and limitation, associated with the passage of time, discipline, and transformation.

Tiko Kekelidze’s clothing embodies the essence of water, not just as a natural element, but also as a symbol of feeling and memory. She observes that water is the first archetype of life, a moving silence, and a force that remains subtle. The graduate expresses that, much like water, humans change, run away, freeze, and evaporate. Elene Chikvadze draws inspiration from the unique creations of nature, considering each one fascinating in its own right. She finds beauty in the slimy and occasionally sparkling trails of snails, the fluttering of bats in the night sky, the perpetual buzzing of flies, and the terrifying yet captivating movements of centipedes. She also highlights the intriguing appearance and posture of grasshoppers, which seem to look down on their surroundings, as if assessing their next move. Elene believes there is a remarkable connection among all living creatures, each of which defies expectations. Lizi Tsamalashvili based her collection on the theme of creation: “And God created man in His image—in the image of God.” She reflects on how humanity continues to pray to the Lord and imitate Him, taking inspiration from the world that God has created. “There is no greater artist than Him,” she states. “That is why I aspire to imitate the Creator of the world through my creativity.”

During the defense of bachelor’s theses, significant attention was given to showcasing technological skills. Students presented projects developed with the latest software, utilizing sustainable materials and innovative cutting techniques. The head of the program emphasized that these presentations are vital not only for demonstrating students’ capabilities but also for highlighting the effectiveness of the faculty’s academic program, which ensures a high-quality education aligned with international standards. According to Professor Lia Lursmanashvili, the collections presented reflect the readiness of graduates from the Fashion Design Technologies Program at the Georgian Technical University to establish themselves in both the local and international fashion industries. They represent a new generation committed to creating fashion designs that are multifaceted, sustainable, and forward-thinking.
