GTU Public Theater-Studio “Modinakhe” has closed its 80th season
“The theater-studio “Modinakhe” has already closed its 80th season. 80 successful years and more than 100 revived works by Georgian and foreign authors. “Modinakhe” has been giving the youth the opportunity to master classical Georgian literature, dress up in theatrical roles, and perform in front of a loyal audience for 80 years. Such projects not only serve to popularize theatrical art, but they are also a means of friendship and creative self-expression, which is vital for students. And culture begins precisely where young people study with enthusiasm and create something valuable,” said Levan Pipia, Head of the GTU Student Services, Culture and Sports Department, at the closing event of the 80th season of “Modinakhe”.
The first evening of the Drama Troupe of the Georgian Polytechnic Institute took place on November 5th, 1945. The founder of the troupe was Dorian Kitia, a student of the Faculty of Architecture, who later became an Honored Artist of Arts and the Director of the Art Fund of Georgia. Over the years, notable figures such as People’s Artist of Georgia Nodar Chkheidze, celebrated director Mikheil Tumanishvili, Irakli Kokrashvili, and actors Avtandil Kakhniashvili, Avtandil Gelovani, Marlen Kitia, Kote Makharadze, Gogi Kavtaradze, Avtandil Evnadze, TV director Tariel Kurtskhalia, and Honored Artists of Georgia Boris Tsipuria, Abesalom Loria, and Murman Jinoria, all worked with the troupe. Between 1945 and 2025, more than 100 works by both Georgian and international authors have been staged in the theater.

This year, the public Theater-Studio concluded its season with a performance of Nodar Dumbadze’s “White Flags”. As Levan Pipia notes, in the theater “Modinakhe” the play first was staged 45 years ago, and its staging and direction attributed to artistic director Nugzar Butskhrikidze.
“Modinakhe” successfully wrapped up the 2024/2025 theater season, culminating in a final performance of “White Flags”, based on Nodar Dumbadze’s timeless novel. This production served as a reminder of the power of art and the significance of humanity, reflecting the humanistic ideas and deep emotions expressed by the great writer.
Culture plays a vital role in student life by fostering personal growth, enhancing critical and creative thinking, and deepening emotional intelligence and social responsibility.
As a technical higher education institution, our priority is not only to train professional architects, builders, technologists, and humanitarian scientists but also to shape them into responsible citizens guided by intellectual values and humanistic principles. This mission is embodied by the theater-studio “Modinakhe”, which brings young people together through creative experiences, providing them with opportunities for self-expression while enhancing their professional and social skills. To support this mission, the university is developing cultural spaces with the backing of our rector, Academician David Gurgenidze. We actively encourage all student initiatives that promote a love of art, foster an appreciation for national heritage, and strengthen spiritual values.
We congratulate the “Modinakhe” Theater-Studio on the successful completion of the season and thank each student, teacher, and organizer who contributed to the creation of this important cultural process,” says Levan Pipia.
In the 2024/2025 theater season, the Theater-Studio participated in and won two international festivals, in Turkey and Georgia, and more than 27,000 spectators attended more than 90 performances. At the closing season event, the Head of the GTU Student Services, Culture and Sports Department, presented certificates of appreciation to amateur actors.
