Faculty of Informatics and Control Systems Day at GTU
The Faculty of Informatics and Control Systems Day was celebrated for the third time at Georgian Technical University. Throughout the year, all faculties and scientific research institutes at the university commemorate the anniversary of their founding. This tradition, initiated by the Rector, Academician David Gurgenidze, has been established since 2023.

The Rector, Academician David Gurgenidze, Chancellor, Professor Carlo Kopaliani, Vice-Rectors Tamar Tsereteli and Tamar Lominadze, members of the university community, students, graduates, and other guests attended the event. The Dean of the Faculty of Informatics and Control Systems made opening remarks.

Professor Taliko Zhvania expressed gratitude to the guests and thanked the Rector for establishing “Faculty Day” at the university, as well as for the support that David Gurgenidze provides to every faculty, researcher, and student.

The Dean of the Faculty of Informatics and Control Systems discussed the various international scientific events that took place throughout the year and highlighted the successful projects undertaken by the faculty’s research staff and students during the 2024/2025 academic year.

“The Bachelor’s programs in Computer Science in Georgian and the English-language Bachelor’s programs in Computer Engineering developed by the faculty have received positive assessments from accreditation experts for the 2024/2025 academic year. We have prepared three programs that have been submitted for cluster accreditation. Additionally, six of our faculty programs are in the crucial phase of preparation for ABET accreditation. Next year, 16 programs will undergo cluster accreditation, and we have already begun active preparations for this process. It is important to note that the faculty is also working on a five-year teacher training program that we plan to submit for accreditation this fall. Furthermore, as part of the GIF project “Innovative ICT Education for a Secure Future” we are collaborating with a British university to develop a joint English-language Master’s program in cybersecurity, which will be open to students next year. To enhance our educational programs and ensure they align with labor market requirements, potential employers of our students have actively participated in the planning and development of these programs. The faculty has established close, continuous cooperation with these employers, who conduct master classes and industrial tours for students. I would like to express my gratitude to Academician David Gurgenidze, the rector of the Georgian Technical University, for his significant contribution to our success. His support for the faculty has been invaluable,” Taliko Zhvania concluded in her speech.

In his welcoming speech, Academician David Gurgenidze emphasized that the Faculty of Informatics and Control Systems is one of the most successful faculties at the university. Here, students have ample opportunities to study the latest technological advancements, conduct experiments, and engage in research.

The rector pointed out that 72 years ago, in 1953, a new chair was established at the Georgian Polytechnic Institute, initiated by Professor Nikoloz Gabashvili. This chair, titled “Automation of Industrial Processes,” marked the beginning of the Georgian Technical University leadership in the field of information technologies.

“Today, we have the opportunity to emphasize once again the significance of informatics and control systems as essential fields of study and their impact on education, the economy, industries, and everyday life. Information technologies and control systems are not merely technical disciplines; they are the core of progress and the foundation of all innovative processes, ranging from artificial intelligence to cybersecurity. For over seven decades, the Faculty of Informatics and Control Systems at Georgian Technical University has been a leader in this field, successfully training highly qualified personnel who address critical state issues, launch innovative startups, and manage significant technological projects both in Georgia and abroad. The contribution of the Faculty of Informatics and Control Systems to the country’s development is immeasurable. In a world of global competition, the faculty’s mission is expanding to include the training of future leaders. We are committed to education, the advancement of science, and the construction of a digital Georgia. I would like to express my gratitude to the faculty members, researchers, administration, and especially the students who are laying the groundwork for the future of technological development and digital transformation in Georgia,” noted David Gurgenidze in his speech.

At the end of the event, the Rector, Academician David Gurgenidze and the Dean, Professor Taliko Zhvania, based on the decision of the GTU Academic Council, awarded the GTU Gold Medal for exceptional service to the university to the former Dean of the Faculty of Informatics and Control Systems, Professor Nodar Lominadze, and the former Head of the Department of Engineering Physics of the same faculty, Professor Akaki Gigineishvili, and honorary diplomas to Professors: Elisabed Khakhutashvili, Badri Meparishvili, and Levan Giorgashvili.

In addition, the Rector awarded more than 30 outstanding students of Informatics and Control Systems with honorary diplomas. The Faculty Day closed with a concert program specially prepared by the students.
