The Georgian Technical University Student Public Theater-Studio “Modinakhe” is the winner of the Sighnaghi International Theater Festival. By the decision of the festival jury, the university troupe was awarded the first place and the main prize.

At the Sighnaghi International Festival, “Modinakhe”, under the leadership of the artistic director and chief director Nugzar Butskhrikidze, presented the play “The Last Seagull” staged by director Giorgi Chanturia based on the play by Mikho Mosulishvili.

The festival, which featured troupes from various countries along with Georgian amateur theaters, was held for the third time with the support of the Ministry of Culture of Georgia and the Sighnaghi City Hall. The goal of the event is to support amateur and public theaters.

As the artistic director and chief director of “Modinakhe” notes, the university troupe participated in the Sighnaghi International Theater Festival for the second time, and this time, the performance staged by young director Giorgi Chanturia received great acclaim from both the audience and the jury.

“The Sighnaghi International Theater Festival, which brought together theater professionals from the regions of Georgia and abroad, was a great success and ended with a happy result for us. There was an ovation from the audience and congratulations from theater experts and directors. Our winning university troupe, which is one of the oldest public theaters in Georgia, was awarded by the mayor of Sighnaghi. It is noteworthy that the success of “Modinakhe” is the result of the great support that the troupe has from the administration of the Georgian Technical University. This success belongs not only to our talented young people but also to everyone who cares about the development of theatrical art in Georgian universities. That is why I would like to thank the rector, Academician David Gurgenidze, and his team, including the Chancellor, Mr. Carlo Kopaliani, as well as the Department of Student Services, Culture, and Sports. We would like to thank the Ministry of Culture of Georgia, the Governor of Kakheti Region, and the Mayor of Sighnaghi for organizing this extraordinary festival, the festival management and jury members, and most importantly, the audience, who received “The Last Seagull” with a standing ovation. Every success is a great motivation for the entire university troupe to work on new productions and roles with more inspiration and a heightened creative mood,” says Nugzar Butskhrikidze.

According to the director of the winning play, Giorgi Chanturia, “Modinakhe” was able to accurately convey the main message and idea of the play to the audience.

“I am glad that I had the opportunity to participate in the Sighnaghi International Theater Festival with the university troupe. I think we accurately conveyed the main message and idea of our play to the audience. Winning the main prize of the festival is another victory for the Georgian Technical University and its students. I am sure that this result will create even greater motivation for us - for me and the actors of the troupe,” said Giorgi Chanturia.

The rector of the Georgian Technical University, Academician David Gurgenidze, congratulates the Student Public Theater-Studio “Modinakhe” on another success.

“I congratulate the university’s student troupe on its success at the Sighnaghi International Theater Festival. The first place and the main prize of the festival are an appreciation of the creative thinking of our talented young people and the great work they do every day, which they dedicate to theatrical art, in parallel with their studies. The festival’s favorite, the excellent performance “The Last Seagull”, which revives the last episode in the life of the national hero of Georgia, the famous graduate of our university, Zhuli Shartava, is a clear confirmation of this. It is a matter of pride that one of the oldest and most distinguished university theater troupes – “Modinakhe” is an integral part of the Georgian Technical University and occupies a special place in student life. Its next success directly indicates how important it is to support culture and art in the academic space. I am sure that this success will become a source of further creative inspiration for creating new performances and roles,” notes Rector David Gurgenidze.
