Chancellor of the Georgian Technical University Carlo Kopaliani and Head of the Faculty of Sustainable Mountain Development Noe Khozrevanidze, with their Italian colleagues, discussed current issues of developing the master’s program, as well as prospects for future cooperation in research and teaching, including opportunities for student and faculty mobility within the framework of the K1 and K2 activities of the European Union program ERASMUS+.

The discussion focused on opportunities to prepare joint grant research projects and develop professional training presentations aimed at sustainable mountain development, in partnership with the University of Milan within the framework of the European Union’s Research and Innovation Framework Program HORIZON EUROPE.

During International Exchange Week, GTU representatives got acquainted with UNIMONT’s activities, toured the teaching and research laboratories and learning spaces, and spoke with Italian and international students. To share European models of student career development and internships, as well as graduate employment, they visited important places in the Edolo mountain region of the Italian Alps - Stelvio National Park, Bormio Botanical Garden, Regional Reserve of Rock Engravings of Ceto, Cimbergo and Paspardo, Edolo Hydroelectric Power Plant, and visited the Mountain and Ski Tourism Center. GTU representatives met with interested organizations, local farmers, and representatives of enterprises operating in the mountains - including Monchieri mountain viticulture and winemaking, and were introduced to the specifics of the supply chain of the ancient corn variety - Mais Nero Spinoso.

At the end of the visit, at the Department of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences (DISAA) of the University of Milan to summarize the results of the week, the Chancellor of the Georgian Technical University and the Head of the Faculty of Sustainable Mountain Development met with the Vice-Rector for Internationalization of the University of Milan, Professor Paola Catenaccio, heads of various UNIMONT departments and the research center Ge.S.Di.Mont, scientists, and professors.

As the GTU Chancellor noted, the working visit to the University of Milan was important and interesting in many ways, both in sharing experiences and developing new approaches for the effective functioning of the Faculty of Mountain Sustainable Development of the Georgian Technical University and launching a new master’s program.

“The working visit to the University of Milan and the UNIMONT Hub is an excellent opportunity to deepen scientific and academic cooperation and lay the foundation for a highly organized international master’s program, which will fully focus on the sustainable development of mountain regions and the education of young professional specialists and researchers. It is important that through intensive dialogue and sharing experiences, we were able to generate new visions and ideas and set specific objectives in the direction of joint research initiatives, as well as mobility programs and knowledge exchange. We are confident that a long-term strategic partnership will be established with the University of Milan and UNIMONT. We hope that by cooperating with our Italian colleagues, we will achieve significant results that will benefit not only the Georgian Technical University but also overcoming the unique challenges of mountainous regions in Georgia and the South Caucasus,” stated Carlo Kopaliani.
