Students of the Georgian Technical University, led by the Dean of the Faculty of Chemical Technology and Metallurgy, Professor Liana Targamadze, as well as the university administration representatives, honored the memory of Konstantine Abkhazi, the nephew of Ilia Chavchavadze, Major General of the Artillery of the National Army of the Democratic Republic of Georgia, member of the National Council of Georgia, Chairman of the National Democratic Party, one of the founders of Tbilisi State University, one of the leaders of the national liberation movement of 1921-1923, member of the Independence Committee and head of the Military Center, and the national hero of Georgia, and 14 officers and soldiers shot with him.

Students laid wreaths at the memorial in Vake Park to national heroes - Major General Konstantine Abkhazi and 14 members of the Military Center who were shot by the Chekists on May 20, 1923: Generals Aleksandre Andronikashvili, Major General Varden Tsulukidze, Colonels Giorgi Khimshiashvili and Rostom Muskhelishvili, Officers Ivane Kutateladze and Nikoloz Zandukeli, rotmistrs Simon Bagration-Mukhraneli and Parnaoz Karalashvili, Iason Kereselidze, Levan Klimiashvili, Dimitri Chrdileli, Simon Chiabrishvili, Colonels Aleksandre Machavariani and Elizbar Gulishvili.

As the students noted, 102 years after the execution of the Georgian patriots, the heroism of the 15 Georgians who stood steadfast in the face of their executioners will always remain a moral lesson for future generations.

“Kote Abkhazi and 14 chosen patriots sacrificed themselves for the independence and freedom, for the fight against the Bolsheviks. Students of the Georgian Technical University honor the memory of those who sacrificed themselves for their homeland. It is impossible to forget who our ancestors were, how they defended their homeland, and how they sacrificed themselves. It is impossible to forget the last words of Konstantine Abkhazi - “I’m dying with joy, because I have become worthy of being brought to the altar of Georgia as a lamb to be slaughtered. My death will bring victory to Georgia!” This is a clear example of how to live for the homeland,” the students of the Georgian Technical University noted at the memorial.

For information, Konstantine Abkhazi and the 14 comrades shot with him were awarded the Order of National Hero 100 years after their death.
