The Rector reviewed the development opportunities of the energy sector and spoke about Georgian Technical University’s mission, as a flagship higher education institution, to train young professionals in energy and related engineering fields, as well as to conduct scientific research in the sector.

According to David Gurgenidze, without the development of the energy sector, it is impossible to effectively develop other engineering fields and the country’s economy, which should be implemented in close partnership between the Georgian Technical University, organizations operating in the energy sector, and industries.

“The energy sector is one of the main cornerstones of Georgia’s sustainable development and technological progress, and the National Energy and Water Supply Regulatory Commission is one of the most important links in the energy system. Without a strong, innovative energy system, the effective development of other engineering sectors and the long-term sustainability of the country’s economy are impossible. The university, energy organizations, and industries must cooperate closely and together to form a young generation of professionals.

The university’s responsibility is to provide students with not only a solid theoretical foundation, but also practical experience relevant to modern industrial requirements. Our mission is to prepare specialists and researchers who will be competitive in Georgia and abroad, meet international standards, and be able to respond to global challenges.

We hope that the signing of the Memorandum of Cooperation with the Energy Training Center established by the Georgian National Energy and Water Supply Regulatory Commission will be an important step towards achieving this goal, and the partnership will strengthen the connection between the academic community and industry, create new platforms for joint research and innovation, and allow our students to gain valuable practical experience and, in the future, to develop their careers. I am confident that together we will create an ecosystem promoting innovation and progress in the Georgian energy sector,” the Rector noted.

In his speech, the Chairman of the Georgian National Energy and Water Supply Regulatory Commission focused on the role of the Georgian Technical University in the energy sector.

“Today, we got acquainted with the laboratories of the Faculty of Power Engineering, which are equipped with modern technologies and play an important role in the teaching process. Students have the opportunity to receive theoretical and practical fundamental knowledge at the Faculty of Power Engineering, which is of paramount importance for becoming a professional energy specialist. It is worth noting that the Faculty of Power Engineering has a 95-year history and is a leader in the development of energy specialists. The GNERC closely cooperates with the Georgian Technical University. Many professionals employed at the Commission are graduates of the Faculty of Power Engineering. 18 students of the GTU completed internships at the Commission and were subsequently successfully employed not only at the Commission, but also in companies operating in the energy sector. My team and I aim to contribute to the development of the Faculty of Power Engineering and attract young people to the energy sector as much as possible,” said David Narmania.

Professor Ketevan Kutateladze, Dean of the GTU Faculty of Power Engineering, delivered a speech at the event, emphasizing the need for effective cooperation between the university and industries operating in the energy sector to train young professionals for the sector in accordance with international standards and conduct research activities more effectively.

About the mechanisms and main aspects supporting the development of the energy sector, spoke head of the Department of Energy Policy and Investment Projects of the Ministry of Economy, Jubo Turashvili, Gia Arabidze, Professor of the Faculty of Power Engineering, Energy Expert, Revaz Arveladze, President of the Energy Academy, Vano Zardiashvili, Director General of the Georgian State Electrosystem, and other guests.

Within the event framework, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Georgian Technical University and the Energy Training Center, by Rector David Gurgenidze and Chairman of the GNERC, David Narmania.

As the parties noted, the memorandum implementation will promote education in the electricity, natural gas, water supply, and irrigation sectors, share knowledge and experience, and develop joint scientific and educational projects.

The university and the training center will jointly organize thematic scientific events, share intellectual and technical potential, and promote the development of theoretical and practical skills of students and staff. The memorandum also envisages the organization of internships and training-industrial practices for energy students.

As part of the event, at the debate, the challenges in the energy sector, ways to overcome them, and prospects were discussed.

In addition, at the Faculty of Power Engineering, the guests got acquainted with the infrastructure equipped with modern technologies, a technical and educational-research laboratory base, the specifics of their functioning, and educational-practical training.
