International Student Conference “Current Issues of Intellectual Property Law” Held at GTU
An international student conference “Current Issues of Intellectual Property Law” was held at the Faculty of Law and International Relations of the Georgian Technical University.

The conference was opened by the Vice-Rector of the Georgian Technical University. As Professor Tamar Tsereteli noted, in 2021, according to the Memorandum of Cooperation signed between the Georgian Technical University and the Georgian National Intellectual Property Center, the parties permanently hold joint seminars, conferences, symposiums, and other events to raise awareness about intellectual property.

The Tbilisi City Hall Department of Culture, Education, Sports and Youth Affairs significantly contributed to the organization of the conference. Tbilisi City Hall has established prizes for the competition participants. According to Tamar Tsereteli, the active involvement of Sakpatenti, as the institution defining intellectual property policy and strategy in the country, is particularly important in the educational process. That is why Sakpatenti, with the Georgian Technical University and Tbilisi City Hall, organized the international student conference.

“A conference is held at the Georgian Technical University, which is of crucial importance for both academic and legal circles, as well as for the development of our country. Today’s reality, which is based on knowledge and technological progress, shows that intellectual property is one of the most important resources. The Georgian Technical University is proud to be a leading center of science and innovation. Our researchers, scientists, and students work on implementing new ideas, and innovative discoveries and solving modern challenges, which require protection. Without intellectual property rights, the works of our scientists can be used unfairly. Intellectual property law is not just a legal formality - it is a pillar that protects creativity, encourages innovation, and values labor. That is why today’s conference is so important, allowing us to discuss challenges, legal mechanisms, and best practices to better protect the rights of inventors and authors. It is important to involve our students – future scientists, engineers, and lawyers. Congratulations on the conference opening and thank you for participating in this important dialogue. Your ideas and engagement give us hope that the future of our university and country will be more innovative, fair, and better protected,” Tamar Tsereteli noted in her speech.

Sakpatenti Chairman Soso Giorgadze, Dean of the Faculty of Law and International Relations Mamuka Giorgadze, and Deputy Head of the City Department of Culture, Education, Sports and Youth Affairs of Tbilisi City Hall Vasil Karseladze addressed the conference participants.

The conference was held in a hybrid mode, and students from Italian and Estonian universities participated via the Zoom platform, while students from Georgian universities presented their reports on-site.

Student reports were evaluated by a special jury consisting of three members (Miranda Gurgenidze, Head of the Quality Assurance Service of the GTU Faculty of Law and International Relations; Meri Macharashvili, Head of the Department of Inventions and New Varieties of Sakpatenti; Vasil Karseladze, Deputy Head of the City Service for Culture, Education, Sports, and Youth Affairs of the Tbilisi City Hall).

The authors of the five best reports: students Nitsi Godabrelidze (GTU), Rusudan Sadghobelashvili (GTU), Nutsa Margishvili (TSU), Ana Patsatsia (TSU) and Saba Sepherteladze (University of Bologna, Italy), were awarded trips to a scientific-cognitive youth camp in Bakuriani, funded by the Tbilisi City Hall.

At the end of the conference, all participants were awarded relevant certificates and, funded by the Tbilisi City Hall, trips to participate in short-term youth cultural events. The scientific theses presented at the conference will be published as a collection shortly.
