The Rector of the Georgian Technical University, Academician David Gurgenidze, expresses his sorrow over the death of the world-famous sculptor, artist-monumentalist and public figure, Zurab Tsereteli, and extends his condolences to his family and relatives.
The university’s scientific and academic circles join the Rector’s condolences.
“We express our sadness over the death of Zurab Tsereteli, a famous sculptor and artist-monumentalist, a person full of kindness and philanthropist, a recipient of UNESCO and numerous international awards and prizes, the author of numerous large-scale projects, a member of the Georgian Parliament in 1992-1995, and a Georgian artist who worked abroad for many years.
His famous monuments in eighteen countries leave an indelible impression on the visitor. The entrance to Tbilisi is adorned with his “Monument to Saint Nino”, and Freedom Square is decorated with the statue of “Saint George”. The world is known for the 30-meter stele “Tears of Mourning”, presented by Zurab Tsereteli as a gift to the American people in honor of those who died in the terrorist attack of September 11, 2001, which stands on the opposite side of the “Statue of Liberty”, on the banks of the Hudson River. The picturesque Bichvinta art houses, swimming pools, artistically decorated with mosaics in the occupied territory of Abkhazia, made by him, in Tbilisi - the Palace of Trade Unions, the bus station, and many others still captivate the visitors.
At the Georgian Technical University, the name and memory of the great artist Zurab Tsereteli will always be immortalized by the magnificent large panel made of metal and enamel, donated by him, “Science”, which adorns the third-floor foyer of the university’s administrative building and is a landmark for all students and foreign colleagues. May God grant the great artist eternal rest!”, is stated in the condolence message of the Rector of the Georgian Technical University.
