Winners of the Photo Contest “Glaciers as Water Resources” Were Awarded at GTU
The winners of the second photo contest “Glaciers as Water Resources” organized by the Faculty of Sustainable Mountain Development at the Georgian Technical University under the auspices of the global events “2025 - Year of Glacier Conservation” and the International Day for the Protection of Water Resources were announced, and a round table was dedicated to the topic.

Dean of the Faculty of Sustainable Mountain Development, Professor Noe Khozrevanidze, and professors-teachers named the first three winners of the photo contest and the authors of the winning photo works in various nominations, which were selected by a competent jury. Both students and pupils of the final grades of general education schools participated in the contest. The best works of the contestants were exhibited in the lobby of the administrative building of the Georgian Technical University.

The first place in the photo contest was won by Aleksandre Gorgijanidze, an 11th grade student of the School-Lyceum “NK”, with his photo “Glacier Chalaati”. The second and third places were shared by Sophio Pandjarashvili, a 10th grade student of the Public School No. 153, with her photo “Glacier Shkhara seen from Ushguli” and Luka Ramishvili, an 11th grade student of the School-Lyceum “NK”, with his composition “Glacier Zofkhito”.

The photo of Ilen Guchua – “From glaciers to energy sources”, a student of the Faculty of Architecture, Urbanism, and Design of the Georgian Technical University, was chosen by the Faculty of Sustainable Mountaineering; The “Victory by Facebook Likes” went to the work of Teona Kalandia, a 10th grade student of the Besik Khulordava Public School in the village of Salkhino, Martvili Municipality, with the photo “Tsachkhura - Our Pride”, while the “People’s Favorite Photo” nomination went to the composition of Ioane Chavleshvili, an 11th grade student of the Gia Goguadze Public School in the village of Bokhvauri, Ozurgeti Municipality, with the photo “Bzhuzhi”.

After the winners were announced, a roundtable discussion was held for the students and pupils who participated in the photo contest in the Niko Nikoladze Hall of the Georgian Technical University.

Dean of the Faculty of Sustainable Mountain Development, Professor Noe Khozrevanidze, and Director of the Tsotne Mirtskhulava Scientific Research Institute of Water Management of the Georgian Technical University, Academician Givi Gavardashvili, spoke to the young people about the necessary measures for the conservation of glaciers, the negative impacts of climate change and global warming, strategies for the protection and sustainable management of water resources and ecosystems, as well as the possibilities of improving water supply and land reclamation systems using innovative technologies, and shared their international experience with them.

The history of glacier observation and the results of their research were presented to the young people by Giorgi Kordzakhia, a research associate at the Scientific Research Institute of Hydrometeorology of the Georgian State Technical University, Zurab Laoshvili, a professor at the Georgian State Technical University, and Mikheil Nikuradze, head of the Natural Hydrometeorological Risk Mitigation Division of the Hydrometeorology Department of the National Environmental Agency.

At the end of the event, the administration of the Faculty of Sustainable Mountain Development awarded the winning young people with diplomas and valuable gifts, and presented certificates to all participants of the photo contest, in addition, the young people were presented with an experimental issue of the faculty newspaper - “Motherland Begins in the Mountains”.
