The Rector of the Georgian Technical University, Academician David Gurgenidze congratulates the Georgian Apostolic Autocephalous Orthodox Church and parishes on the Day of Restoration of Autocephaly.

“On behalf of the Georgian Technical University, I congratulate the Georgian Orthodox Church on the Day of Restoration of Autocephaly!

The Georgian Orthodox Church has played a crucial role in the formation of national identity, the protection of our culture, and the spiritual upbringing of many generations.

Despite the history of difficult challenges of history, especially the abolition of autocephaly in 1811, our Church withstood all trials and continued its historical mission with faith and dedication.

The official recognition of the autocephaly of the Georgian Church by the Ecumenical Patriarchate in 1990, which was the result of the direct efforts of His Holiness and Beatitude Ilia II, once again confirms the unity and spiritual strength of the Georgian nation. This day is a symbol of the power of faith, perseverance, and unity.

The Georgian Technical University has always protected the Georgian cultural heritage and serves the development of our homeland on the spiritual foundations bequeathed by our ancestors.

May God bless Georgia and the Georgian Autocephalous Orthodox Church!”, is stated in the address of the GTU rector.

For information, the autocephaly of the Georgian Orthodox Church was abolished by Tsarist Russia in 1811 and subordinated to the Russian Synod.

The autocephaly of the Georgian Orthodox Church was restored on March 12 (25), 1917, by the Georgian clergy gathered in the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral in Mtskheta at an extraordinary church council. In 1990, through the great efforts of the Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, Ilia II, the Ecumenical Patriarchate officially recognized and acknowledged the independence of the Georgian Church.
