An Almond Alley Was Planted in the Vicinity of GTU
At the initiative of the rector of the Georgian Technical University, academician David Gurgenidze, an almond alley was planted in the vicinity of the university. 60 almond seedlings were planted on Merab Kostava Street, between the 3rd and 6th academic buildings of the university, by the rector, students, professors, and graduates.

The planting of the alley was attended by Giorgi Modebadze, First Deputy Minister of Education, Science, and Youth of Georgia, Tamar Ghvamichava, Deputy Minister, and the ministry representatives.

The Georgian Technical University links the planting of the alley to the university’s famous almond tree, known in the community as the “Gepei Almond” (GTU Almond), which blooms the earliest and is the first to announce the arrival of spring to Tbilisi.

As the rector of Georgian Technical University states, this year is the anniversary of the Technical University’s almond tree. 55 years ago, in front of the university’s administrative building, the university professor and famous chemist Platon Gagnidze planted it.

According to Academician David Gurgenidze, Georgian Technical University is confident that the almond alley, which will bloom in the spring, will become another attraction of the capital.

“Today’s event brings together the past and future of our beloved university. Here, 55 years ago, Professor Platon Gagnidze planted the first almond tree, which over the years has become a symbol of resilience, growth, and continuity. The “Gepei Almond” is part of our history, and 55 years later, it has become a symbol of a tradition that connects us with nature and reminds us of the importance of sustainability. In 2025, exactly 55 years after planting the first almond tree, we will plant the Almond Alley. Each new tree will not only be a symbol of our environmental commitment, but also a sign of the creation of a new space where knowledge, nature, and innovation grow together. This is our way of affirming that the tradition that connects the human mind and nature will continue and develop in the long term. The Almond Alley will not only add color to our campuses, but it will also be a symbol of how we value the relationship between humans and nature. Let’s create and develop this legacy together, which began with the planting of a single almond tree 55 years ago,” says David Gurgenidze.
