“Georgian Technical University is ready to establish an Institute for American Studies within the university premises, which will be a flagship in the study of the history, culture, statehood, and democracy of our partner and friend country, as well as in the direction of familiarizing it with the general public,” said Academician David Gurgenidze, Rector of Georgian Technical University, during a meeting with Head of Public Affairs Section of the US Embassy - Alexander Daniels.
The meeting with the representative of the US Embassy, who was on a business visit to the university, was attended by Vice-Rectors Tamar Tsereteli and Tamar Lominadze, and the President of the GTU Supervisory Board, Professor Zurab Gudavadze, was chaired by the Rector, Academician David Gurgenidze.
As the rector stated, the Georgian Technical University has many years of fruitful cooperation with such high schools in the United States as Fairfax American University, San Diego State University, San Diego State University Research Foundation, Iowa State University, George Mason University, Harrisburg State University of Pennsylvania, Santa Clara University, American Association of Colleges and Universities, Community Colleges for International Development, Kirkwood Community College, Muscatine Community College, Moraine Valley Educational Center, Waukesha County Technical College, Northern Wisconsin Technical College, Southwest Virginia Community College and Western Iowa Technical College.
“The Georgian Technical University is one of the oldest and largest in the South Caucasus region, has leading scientists and specialists in engineering-technology and humanitarian fields, successful young researchers, and motivated students. Our scientific and academic staff actively cooperates with major international research organizations and centers such as CERN in Switzerland, KEK and J-Parc in Japan, and FERMILAB in the USA. We cooperate with the Willich Center and the DAAD organization. We have close contacts with leading universities in America, Germany, Italy, France, and other European countries. Georgian Technical University is the first university in the region to be awarded ABET accreditation for its English-language bachelor’s program in biomedical engineering. Multilateral international scientific collaboration is important for us, to engage students and academic staff in exchange programs, new contacts, new projects, and goals. I am sure that the Embassy of the United States of America, as always, will help the university in implementing its goals,” said David Gurgenidze.
Alexander Daniels, Head of the Public Affairs Section of the US Embassy, toured the university infrastructure, the Niko Muskhelishvili University Library, and Jiuli Shartava’s Teaching and Research Laboratory of Techniques and Technologies. A business conversation took place online between Alexander Daniels and Professor Zviad Tsamalaidze, a Georgian scientist participating in the CMS collaboration of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), the leader of the Georgian CERN/CMS group at GTU, and the head of the Institute of Quantum Physics and Engineering Technologies at GTU.
As the Head of the Public Affairs Section of the United States Embassy stated at the end of the meeting, the relationship between the Embassy and the Georgian Technical University will be deepened further.
“I had an extraordinary meeting with the rector of the Georgian Technical University. I was very impressed by the presentations of innovative projects by university students and the activities of young people in the laboratory complex of the Faculty of Informatics and Control Systems. The university library was also impressive with its rich and rare collections. Most importantly, I hope that the relationship between the Embassy of the United States of America in Georgia and the Georgian Technical University will further deepen, and exchange programs for students and researchers will be launched more intensively, which will contribute to the process of bringing our countries closer together,” Alexander Daniels noted.
