“On November 10th, in connection with the International Day of Science, at the initiative of the Ministry of Education, Science, and Youth of Georgia, the Ivane Javakhishvili Tbilisi State University held an awarding ceremony for the winners of the “Leonardo da Vinci” contest for student inventors and researchers, as well as for young and meritorious scientists.

It is gratifying that at this celebration of young scientists, based on the Virtual Modeling and Construction Center of the Engineering Physics Department of the Faculty of Informatics and Control Systems of the Georgian Technical University, the group of students won the grand prize with the project “Eco-friendly Smart Fish Farm”, and the team of the same center took first place, and passed the project “Unmanned boat cleaning oil from water”.

Young researchers and scientists actively involved in scientific projects and programs were also awarded, including Irakli Lomidze, Ph.D. of Physics, scientist-collaborator of the Institute of Quantum Physics and Engineering Technologies of the Georgian Technical University. The GTU representatives were very proud that the mentors of the winning teams were doctoral students and scientists of our university. It was again shown how much potential the university has,” Tamar Lominadze said.

The GTU vice-rector, professor Tamar Tsereteli, welcomed the public at the event and announced the formation of the club of young scientists in the university space within the framework of Ilia’s Week.

As the vice-rector said, the club will be led by a scientist-collaborator of the Institute of Quantum Physics and Engineering Technology of GTU, a member of the university scientist group at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) and Japan High Energy Accelerator Research Organization (KEK), as well as the Japan Proton Accelerator Complex J - at PARC, Doctor of Sciences - Irakli Lomidze.

“The older generation well remembers the Young Scientists Club of Georgia, founded 50 years ago by the initiative of Jiuli Shartava, where future scientists flocked, most of whom work at our university today. After 50 years, a club is opening at the Georgian Technical University, where talented, motivated, and research-oriented young scientists will unite.

The club’s purpose is to popularize science, promote the scientific activity of students, produce new scientific research, and so on. It is gratifying that 90 young people have joined the newly created club. I wish them success,” noted Tamar Tsereteli.

For information, the International Day of Science was founded by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization “UNESCO” in 2001.

The purpose of this day is to raise public awareness about the importance of science and promote public involvement in the discussion of current scientific issues.
