At Georgian Technical University, within the Montreal Protocol commitment promotion program, a student conference titled – “Youth to protect the ozone layer” was held.
The conference, which was opened by the vice-rector of the Georgian Technical University - Professor Tamar Tsereteli, was attended by students, professors, and teachers of various faculties of the Georgian Technical University, the chairman of the Department of Environment and Climate Change of the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture of Georgia, the head of the National Ozone Unit - Noe Megrelishvili. and Anna Lobzhanidze - adviser on gender issues of the United Nations Development Program.
According to the vice-rector of the Georgian Technical University, protecting the ozone layer and thoroughly discussing various issues related to its preservation are very important for humanity, especially since the ozone layer plays a great role in protecting human health and the environment.
As Professor Tamar Tsereteli said, the challenges of the 21st century have created certain problems, and the ozone layer, which itself protects us, has become more protective.
“Without the gaseous shell of the celestial body, under the influence of space radiation, the environment would be completely different. In the second layer of the atmosphere, the stratosphere, there is an ozone layer that protects us from harmful radiation from the sun, without the ozone layer, our planet would be 3.5 Kelvin colder. The 21st century is an era of high technology, which reflects on the environment, it is no coincidence that the organizers of the student conference, together with the Georgian Technical University, are the United Nations Development Program, the Ministry of Environment Protection and Agriculture, and the Center for Environmental Information and Education.
It is we, who can find ways to protect the ozone layer. It is gratifying that at the open competition among students – “Youth to Protect the Ozone Layer", which was organized by the Faculty of Transport Systems and Mechanical Engineering, the United Nations Development Program, the Ministry of Environment and Agriculture, and the Center for Environmental Information and Education, the students presented very interesting works. Based on them I can safely say that the project goal - to raise awareness of the importance of the ozone layer for human health and, in general, for the existence of life on Earth - was justified. I wish success to the participants of the conference”, said Tamar Tsereteli.
At the end of the conference, the winning student - Gigi Sakhokia, a student of the Faculty of Law of the Georgian Technical University, was awarded a certificate of participation for the topic “Ozone Layer”.
Anastasia Dvalishvili, a student of the Chemical and Biological Engineering bachelor’s program of the Faculty of Chemical Technology and Metallurgy, won third place with the topic – “Response to the Challenge - Protection of the Ozone Layer and Climate Change”.
Giorgi Otiashvili and Nino Shvelidze, students of the Faculty of Architecture, Urbanism, and Design, became co-owners of the second place with the theme “Lessons to Fight Climate Change".
The first place was won by Shota Siradze, a student of the professional program “Air Conditioning” of the Faculty of Transport Systems and Mechanical Engineering of the Georgian Technical University, with the topic – “Three-circuit heating-cooling boiler of innovative construction”.
Also, at the end of the conference, a panel discussion was held on the topic – “Gender and the Field of Refrigeration and Air Conditioning”. Specialists in the field participate in the discussion.
