The organizers of the scientific-practical conference, together with GTU, are the Mineralogical Society of Georgia, Grigol Tsulukidze Mining Institute, and the Institute of Hydrogeology and Engineering Geology.
The conference was attended by the academic staff of the Faculty of Mining and Geology of GTU, students, scientists-researchers of leading European universities, specialists in the field and guests: Academician of the Georgian National Academy of Sciences - Tamaz Chelidze; Academician of the Georgian National Academy of Sciences - Levan Japaridze; Irakli Gelashvili - Deputy Head of the National Mineral Resources Agency; Vasil Gedevanishvili - head of the National Environment Agency; Executive Director of “Rich Metals Group” - Jondo Shubitidze; Director of the Institute of Geology named after Aleksandre Janelidze of Tbilisi State University - Tamar Tsutsunava; Guram Kutelia - the head of the Department of Geology of TSU and Archil Goliashvili - the head of the Earth Sciences Department of Ilia State University.
The international conference was opened by the vice-rector of the Georgian Technical University, and she spoke about the importance of the mining and geological field and the goals of the international conference.
According to Professor Tamar Lominadze, the conference is dedicated to current issues in geology and mining, and measures to assess and solve environmental problems. In particular, the consistent study of the natural resources of our country, the classification of mineral resources, water resources - fresh, mineral, and thermal, their rational use, the implementation of correct environmental measures, waste management, the study of engineering-geological, ecological and social factors of large mining and geological enterprises.
As the vice-rector noted, the accumulated issues and problems in mining and geology and the resource policy to be implemented by the state are very important, based on the modern experience of the development of the mining-geological field and the latest scientific achievements and technical progress.
The proposed recommendations refer to the reform, one of the main issues of which is the strengthening and developing of the mining and geological sector.
“The mining and geological sector has a great role in Georgia’s economic development. The purpose of the international conference is to discuss the existing problems, outline ways to eliminate them, and discuss new technologies and the educational process that is taking place at the university's Mining and Geology Faculty.
Specialists in the mining-geological field and the private sector openly discuss the lack of specialists, which is one of the painful issues. However, the number of applicants enrolled in the mining and geological faculty through the Unified National Exams of the academic year 2024/25 allows us to say that very soon this problem will be solved and the field will have highly qualified personnel. Together with “RMG” we have approached this success step by step.
The private sector closely cooperates with the Georgian Technical University, such large producers of our country as: “RMG”, “Saknakshiri”, and “Georgian Manganese”. Our students undergo production practice in these companies and are successfully employed. Georgian Technical University improves the teaching environment every year, evidenced by the growing interest from the private sector. On behalf of the university, we thank them for their support. I am sure the conference will be the beginning of future interesting projects”, said Tamar Lominadze.
The Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Georgian Technical University, Professor Zurab Gudavadze, wished success to the participants of the conference and said: “Today is the day of the fall of Sokhumi.
This is the most difficult date in the recent history of Georgia, and at the same time, the day of hope that Georgia will regain the temporarily lost territory with dignity, progress, and peace. A conference was opened at the Georgian Technical University, where researchers discussed important issues for me and all mountaineers.
Recently, my colleagues showed me a photograph of the current situation at the Tkvarcheli coal mine. It is hard to find a person, not even a mountaineer, who would calmly look at these photos. The place where we and our teachers have invested much work has been destroyed. It is especially worth noting that, together with experienced specialists, students are actively involved in the course and organization of today’s conference. It is gratifying that their interest is increasing year by year. It allows me to point out that the time will come very soon and together we will revive Abkhazia, Tkvarcheli”, said Zurab Gudavadze.
The work of the international scientific-practical conference was conducted in three sections. The speakers discussed such important topics for the mining and geological field as protection of underground metal communications and structures from electrochemical corrosion; Characterization of the oxidized-carbonate ore of the Chiatura deposit; Studying the content of the components of explosive “molecular compounds” and their influence on the explosiveness, their synthesis and performance determination; The effectiveness of vertical electrical sensing in solving engineering-geological problems; Morphodynamics and natural processes of the Adjara sector of the Black Sea; Poti coastal zone protection measures; Impact evaluation issues of plastic masses; Overview of the principles of sustainable waste management in the marine environment; Speckled tuffs - ore prospecting criteria and others.
