Academician David Gurgenidze, the rector of the Georgian Technical University, opened the international student conference dedicated to World Tourism Day.
The rector greeted the students, guests and scientists participating in the event and, on behalf of the university, and congratulated the World Tourism Day.
As academician David Gurgenidze noted, Georgia has become one of the most attractive destinations on the world tourist map in recent years. According to the rector, it is good that by the decision of the European Commission of the United Nations World Tourism Organization, Georgia was named as the host country of World Tourism Day in 2024.
“The main theme of this year’s World Tourism Day is “Peace and Tourism”. It is gratifying and proud that the European Commission of the United Nations World Tourism Organization named Georgia as the host country of this year’s World Tourism Day, and it is not accidental.
It is also significant that at the meeting of the UN Security Council, the main theme of which was – “Leaders for peace: united by respecting the UN Charter, in search of a secure future”, the Prime Minister of Georgia, Irakli Kobakhidze, said in his speech: “As a responsible member of the international community, Georgia actively promotes contribution to global peace”. In his speech, the Prime Minister noted - “Georgia deserves to be a peaceful, stable and developed country. Considering this, we have ensured the development of Georgia on this very trajectory - we are regaining the pride and dignity of our nation”.
The international student conference, which is held at the Georgian Technical University, addresses the actual challenge of global and local peace.
The initiative to hold the conference belongs to our still young, mountain sustainable development faculty, which has already achieved tangible success both locally and internationally. It is supported by one of the successful business technologies faculty of the university. Both of them train specialists with different knowledge and skills in tourism. Along with this, the bachelor’s program in Mountain Sustainable Tourism and Hospitality Management is recognized as a priority by the state.
We are glad that the conference is strengthened by the support of international organizations - the United Nations Tourism Organization and the Mountain Partnership, as well as the representatives of Georgian state agencies, private businesses, and the non-governmental sector. On behalf of the university and the students, I thank every one of them.
The event could not have been held without the help of the Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Mariam Kvrivishvili and the head of the National Tourism Administration - Maya Omiadze.
As a result, the conference is considered as a parallel event marking World Tourism Day. We especially thank the World Tourism Organization and the Honorary Doctor of our University, Zurab Pololikashvili, Director of the International Relations Service of the United Nations Tourism Organization -Beka Jakeli, and Cordula Wohlmuther, the Regional Director of the United Nations World Tourism Organization for Europe, who is our honorable guest.
At a bilateral meeting with her, we discussed the prospects of future cooperation, including the involvement of the university in the international network of UN sustainable tourism observatories and the development of an English-language master’s education program for sustainable tourism. This program will be certified by the UN Tourism Organization Academy - UN Tourism.TedQual.
Significantly, the conference is student-oriented and hosts young participants from different countries. Our future specialists will discuss and share ideas and plans on how to make tourism more accessible and harmonious, which will help strengthen peace in our country and around the world.
The conference serves to establish friendship between countries, which is evidenced by the online participation of foreign country students, including doctoral students, as well as foreign researchers, for which we thank them. Once again, I congratulate you on World Tourism Day and wish you a successful, peaceful, safe, and fruitful activity”, the rector - David Gurgenidze noted in his speech.
The participants of the conference were welcomed by Cordula Wohlmuther, Regional Director for Europe of the United Nations World Tourism Organization - Rosalaura Romeo, Maya Omiadze - head of the National Tourism Administration, Chairman of the Georgian Protected Areas Agency – Besik Kusidi, Aleksandre Onofrishvili - Director of the Resorts Development Agency of Georgia, deans of the GTU Business Technologies and Mountain Sustainable Deans of development faculties - Rusudan Kutateladze and Noe Khozrevanidze.

The official part of the event ended with the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the Georgian Technical University and the National Tourism Administration. David Gurgenidze and Maya Omiadze signed the bilateral document, which envisages the deepening of cooperation in the future.
