The rector of GTU has become an associate member of CERN's CMS experiment
The rector of the Georgian Technical University (GTU), Academician David Gurgenidze, has been appointed as an associate member of the CMS experiment at CERN.

This appointment aims to strengthen Georgia's ties with CERN, the world's largest laboratory for elementary particle physics. It recognizes the rector’s significant contributions to the CMS collaboration, as well as his noteworthy organizational and scientific achievements.

Academician David Gurgenidze is currently on a working visit to Geneva at the invitation of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN).

During his visit, he met with Dr. Luca Malgeri, leader of one of the largest CMS experiments at CERN; Professor Tiziano Camporesi, a leading scientist of the CMS experiment; and Dr. Salvatore Buontempo, head of the RPC group.

Discussions between Academician Gurgenidze, Dr. Malgeri, and Professor Camporesi centered on expanding scientific collaboration between Georgian Technical University and CERN, outlining future plans.

The rector, alongside Georgian and international scientists from the CERN CMS experiment, assessed the contributions of Georgian Technical University and GTU scientists to the CMS collaboration, discussing the significance of current research.

Additionally, as part of his visit, the rector met with Georgian physicists working in the RPC group of the CMS muon system. Dr. Salvatore Buontempo briefed the rector on GTU scientists' substantial contributions to the development and operation of RPC cameras.

Following discussions with Academician Gurgenidze and CMS collaboration members, it was decided that CERN will support Georgian Technical University by renovating and equipping a modern physics laboratory at the university, providing state-of-the-art equipment for specific tasks within the CMS collaboration.
