The Rector of the Georgian Technical University, Academician David Gurgenidze, on behalf of the university community, expresses his condolences over the death of a prominent figure of the School of Engineering, an outstanding scientist-researcher and a distinguished teacher, Head of the Department of Civil and Industrial Construction of the Faculty of Construction of the Georgian Technical University, a member of the University’s “Women's Association”, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor Lia Kakhiani, and expresses his condolences to her family, relatives, the Faculty of Construction and the engineering community.

As stated in the condolence letter of the Georgian Technical University, Professor Lia Kakhiani dedicated her entire life to the development of the construction industry and the improvement of engineering and technical education in Georgia.

“Professor Lia Kakhiani, a prominent figure in the engineering school, an excellent scientist and teacher, head of the Department of Civil and Industrial Construction of the Faculty of Construction of the Georgian Technical University, who dedicated her entire life to the development of the construction industry and the improvement of engineering and technical education in Georgia, has passed away at the age of 90.

Professor Lia Kakhiani was distinguished by high professionalism, in-depth knowledge of the field, great diligence, and a principled approach to academic and scientific issues. Her research field included building structures, seismic resistance, and reinforced concrete failure mechanics; she authored 114 scientific papers, including 8 monographs, 12 textbooks, 21 methodological guidelines, and “Eurocode 2” in the Georgian language. Lia Kakhiani was actively involved in several research projects, participated in scientific conferences and forums, and was a member of the University’s “Women’s Association”. Her words and deeds were always considered highly professional and accurate.

Mrs. Lia Kakhiani was immensely loved by everyone at the university, at her native Faculty of Construction - by colleagues, friends, young employees, and students. Her lectures were always interesting and inspiring. She gave young people in-depth knowledge, formed a culture of engineering thinking, and a responsible attitude towards work. Her contribution to the education of young researchers and doctoral students is special. Many of them today successfully continue their pedagogical, scientific, and engineering activities both in Georgia and abroad.

We express our deep sorrow over the death of our senior colleague, dear friend, Professor Lia Kakhiani. Her absence will be a great loss for the Faculty of Construction, the academic and scientific community of the Georgian Technical University, and the engineering school of our country. We express our condolences to her family, relatives, and students. The name and merits of Professor Lia Kakhiani will forever remain in the history of the Faculty of Construction and in our memory,” is stated in the condolence letter of the Rector, Academician David Gurgenidze.
