The printed and electronic versions of the new 5-volume publication, “Construction Encyclopedic Dictionary,” were presented at Georgian Technical University.

The engineering dictionary has been under development at the Faculty of Construction for several years. Its authors are scientists and researchers from Georgian Technical University: Professor Tamaz Khmelidze, Rector, Academician David Gurgenidze, Professor Levan Klimiashvili, and independent researcher-designer Kakhaber Khmelidze.

The presentation of the new technical publication took place within the framework of the IV International Scientific-Practical Seminar – “European Innovative Technologies of Environmental Engineering Protection”. The presentation was attended by Professor Leh Deniz of the Bialystok University of Technology (Poland), Professor Hovhannes Tokmanjian of the Academician I.V. Egyazarov Institute of Water Problems and Hydraulic Engineering (Armenia), scientists and young researchers participating in the international scientific seminar from different countries, scientific-academic circles, and students of the GTU.

Dean of the Faculty of Construction, Professor Zurab Gvishiani, noted that in addition to the main authors, 48 professors and students of the Faculty of Construction, as well as representatives of various organizations, contributed to the compilation of the “Construction Encyclopedic Dictionary”.

The publication contains 16,350 terms. According to Zurab Gvishiani, the goal of the authors of the 5-volume is to provide Georgian builders, architects, geologists, energy specialists, and hydroengineers, and students of the aforementioned fields, with terms related to construction and its related fields and their complete definitions in printed and electronic form.

According to Professor and dictionary author Tamaz Khmelidze, of the Faculty of Construction, the new edition is accessible, convenient, illustrated, and at the same time, written in an easily understandable language for the target groups.

According to Tamaz Khmelidze, the dictionary, which includes the classification of the main directions of construction and conveys the terms, words, and technical phraseologies as completely as possible, will also allow specialists to use modern electronic databases in designing and implementing construction. For this purpose, the authors used the program TLTERM (professional term base editor) and the terminology management computer program TLEX SUITE.

As the rector of the Georgian Technical University, academician David Gurgenidze, one of the authors of the “Construction Encyclopedic Dictionary”, noted, working on the dictionary is a never-ending process, because language is a constantly changing phenomenon, which is also constantly filled with new words, terms and concepts, this process is especially reflected in the field of construction. According to David Gurgenidze, working on the dictionary is also complicated by the fact that the area of use of terms and concepts is constantly changing.

“The large scale of construction, the tasks of creating a material and technical base for the country’s economic development require consideration and reflection of the construction industry, in particular, building materials, structures, technologies, laying, management, design, calculation methods, safety standards, and many other nuances. We believe all this is closely related to improving the quality of education, scientific research, IT technologies, and innovations. We hope that the new five-volume dictionary will enrich the Georgian language and contribute to the formation of young specialists as professionals in the field,” said David Gurgenidze.
