“Earth Day reminds the international community annually that nature and the environment are an integral part of our lives. The land we walk on, the air we breathe, the water we drink, and every living creature together create a harmonious whole that sustains our lives. Sustainable environmental protection is ensured by the synthesis of science, education, and technology. Therefore, it is not surprising that each of us - academic staff and students of the Georgian Technical University - uses various platforms to share ideas on overcoming environmental challenges and sustainable development with interested individuals and various groups of society. This is one of the main tasks. Together we must protect the environment, which means clean air, safe and clean water, rich forests, oceans, seas, lakes, and rivers full of life, a stable climate, and a healthy future,” the rector of the Georgian Technical University, Academician David Gurgenidze made a statement on International Earth Day.
Earth Day is celebrated annually at the university. With the involvement of students from the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Biosystems Engineering and the Faculty of Sustainable Mountain Development, various activities are held, in which students from various faculties of the university are involved.
“April 22 reminds us of how important it is to protect nature and the environment, how our daily behavior affects the environment, and unites us for a common goal - to protect the planet and its sustainable future. Students, the youth, you have the power to make a significant change in the direction of environmental protection. Recycling waste, saving water, planting trees, walking or cycling, or simply picking up trash - these everyday actions, when a large part of society is involved in them, bring about big changes. You must protect the planet because the Earth is not only our home, it is also the hope for the future," said David Gurgenidze.
For information, in 1970, with the establishment of Earth Day, another idea for public awareness development was laid. The fight for a clean and healthy environment is becoming more relevant every day, as climate change becomes more and more obvious every day. Along with the growth of awareness, the mobilization of civil society is also increasing, which today protests climate change with a united force worldwide.
April 22, in this sense, is a distinctive date. This day has been celebrated in Georgia since 1990, and within its framework, cleaning and greening campaigns are held throughout the country.
