“Zhiuli Shartava: Legacy of Courage and Patriotism” — Public Lecture at GTU
An event dedicated to the 81st anniversary of the birth of the first national hero of Georgia, state and public figure, former member of the Parliament, former Chairman of the Council of Ministers and Defense Council of the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia, and distinguished graduate of the university – Zhiuli Shartava, was held at the Georgian Technical University.

Within the framework of the event dedicated to the 81st anniversary of Zhiuli Shartava’s birth, the Dean of the Faculty of Law and International Relations of GTU, Associate Professor Mamuka Giorgadze, held a public lecture titled “Zhiuli Shartava: Legacy of Courage and Patriotism”.

According to the Dean of the Faculty of Law and International Relations, the public lecture aims to once again express respect for the memorable legacy of Zhuli Shartava and introduce his heroism to students.

Professor Mamuka Giorgadze spoke about the significance of Zhuli Shartava’s actions and emphasized that the life of a national hero is a magnificent example of patriotism and self-sacrifice that inspires future generations to uphold the values for which Zhuli Shartava and the soldiers who died for the unity of Georgia fought.

“We will fight to the end, as long as we can, and if death is our fate, it should not be a great tragedy. Such boys are dying and it is difficult to think about life while watching them. No matter what you do, you can’t escape fate,” said a man who stood at the forefront of the fight for the freedom and unity of Georgia not with weapons, but with principles, honor, and an unwavering belief in duty. At a time when the enemy was trying to crush the spirit of our nation with chaos and war, Zhiuli Shartava chose to defend his homeland until the last breath rather than surrender. What does his heroism mean to us today? It is more than the memory it is the highest responsibility. Shartava’s life teaches us that patriotism is not just words – it is action. His unwavering commitment to Georgia’s sovereignty and unity should inspire us to work for the future of our country and defend the values for which he sacrificed his life. To you, the future of Georgia, the courage of Zhiuli Shartava reminds us that true strength lies in integrity, and true patriotism is defined by the desire to serve our homeland. Let us always remember his sacrifice, honor his legacy, and build the Georgia he dreamed of,” Mamuka Giorgadze noted in his speech.

To immortalize the memory of Zhiuli Shartava, director Giorgi Chanturia staged a dramatic performance, “The Last Seagull,” based on the play by playwright Mikho Mosulishvili, at the Georgian Technical University’s Public Theater-Studio “Modinakhe.”
