An international conference was dedicated to the anniversary of Viktor Eristavi, a famous scientist at GTU
At the Georgian Technical University, organized by the Faculty of Chemical Technology and Metallurgy and under the auspices of the Department of Environmental Engineering and Ecology named after Professor Victor Eristavi, the jubilee International Scientific Conference – “Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development” was held.

The scientific event was dedicated to the 85th anniversary of the birth of the famous scientist, the founder of the Department of Environmental Protection and Engineering Ecology at the University, Professor Viktor Eristavi.

The conference was opened by the deputy rector in the field of science, Professor Tamar Lominadze, and was attended by representatives of the university administration, scientific and academic circles, foreign researchers, students, and other guests.

Professor Tamar Lominadze welcomed the audience and gave them the best wishes of the Rector of the Georgian Technical University, Academician David Gurgenidze. She focused on the greatest scientific achievements of Viktor Eristavi in the development of the field of chemistry.

As Tamar Lominadze noted, the international scientific conference dedicated to the anniversary of a great scientist brings together researchers to solve specific environmental problems and create an adequate action plan for modern reality because environmental protection and overcoming global ecological challenges are essential for the sustainability of life on the planet.

“The scientific legacy of the famous scientist and honorable patriot, with wide erudition, Victor Eristavi, concerns analytical chemistry, the development of methods for determining rare elements, and research on environmental protection problems. He created the mock-up of the absorption spectrum - a laser device for remote determination of atmospheric gas pollution. The international conference dedicated to the 85th anniversary of this great scientist, the founder of the Department of Environmental Protection, currently the Department of Environmental Protection Engineering and Ecology in our university, brings together scientists and researchers with their visions, knowledge, and experience. So that we can solve specific environmental problems with our joint effort, and develop a plan to make it possible to overcome global environmental challenges for the sustainable development of the world with the direct involvement of scientists, taking into account that the current changes in the world will constantly affect the environment of our country.

The conference discussed several important topics, the priorities leading in the international scientific space to the direction of environmental protection. We wish success to the participants”, said Tamar Lominadze.

The event participants were welcomed by the Dean of the Faculty of Chemical Technology and Metallurgy of GTU, Associate Professor Liana Targamadze. As she said, “Environmental protection is one of today’s greatest priorities. It is important to actively participate in the creation of a sustainable future of the world through interdisciplinary cooperation, the use of technological innovations, and joint actions, which is equal to the protection of life on earth.”

The Vice-Rector of GTU, Associate Professor - Tamar Tsereteli, Head of the Department of Environmental Engineering and Ecology, Professor - Dimitri Eristavi, EU Climate Change Expert - Kevin Ramirez online from Great Britain, Head of the Caucasus Research and Innovation Center -Julia Schwartz and Miles Lalor, a researcher at the same center, President of the Waste Management Association - Giorgi Guliashvili, Academician of the Georgian National Academy of Sciences -Vladimir Tsitsishvili, Deputy Head of the Environment and Climate Change Department of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Agriculture of Georgia, National Responsible Person for the Ozone Layer - Noe Megrelishvili, Deputy General Director of “RMG Company” for Environmental Protection - Konstantine Khachapuridze, scientist-researcher of the Natural Environment Pollution and Forecasting Department of the Scientific Research Institute of Hydrometeorology of GTU -Natela Gigauri, presented a speech to the audience.

The work of the international conference was divided into six sections:
• Environmental protection and new technologies;
• Socio-economic aspects of environmental protection and ecological safety;
• Assessment of the ecological condition of environmental objects;
• Biodiversity and urban ecology;
• Environmental chemistry and ecology;
• Ecological aspects of energy - energy efficiency.

Georgian and foreign researchers discussed such topics as analysis of cases of use of drones in the field of environmental protection, preservation of natural ecosystems in Georgia, the influence of heat on the structure and porosity of natural heulandites, problems of atmospheric air pollution with ozone, modern industrial wastewater treatment systems, possibilities and results of recycling, atmospheric research of PM10 air pollution by numerical modeling according to Rustavi example and others.

The conference materials will be published in the electronic collection form and placed on the official website of the GTU - www.gtu.ge and any interested person will have access to the electronic collection.
