The Faculty of Transport Systems and Mechanical Engineering in its current form was established based on the change in the name of the previously existing Faculty of Transport and Mechanical Engineering, which was implemented by the Resolution No. 01-05-04/75 of the Academic Council of the Georgian Technical University of June 24, 2021 and the Resolution No. 01-06-02/37 of the Representative Council (Senate) of September 30, 2021.

Currently, the Faculty of Transport Systems and Mechanical Engineering is one of the educational, scientific and administrative departments of the Georgian Technical University, which trains qualified specialists for the transport, mechanical engineering, industrial, metallurgical and entrepreneurial fields.

Transport is one of the most important and continuously growing sectors of the national economy, and its development relies on the harmonious integration of all transport types and relevant infrastructure. Equally critical for the country’s technological and industrial progress is the development of modern mechanical engineering production. This system is complemented by the field of metallurgy, materials science, and metal processing, which ensures the quality and competitiveness of engineering materials - essential for the successful development of transport and industry in general.

The mission of the Faculty of Transport Systems and Mechanical Engineering of the Georgian Technical University is to implement higher educational and scientific-research activities in relation to the above-mentioned branches of the national economy, to provide them with the necessary quality and quantity of specialists and scientific research results.

The faculty currently comprises the following departments:

Most programs offered by the faculty are fully state-funded due to their national priority. The faculty trains specialists across four educational levels (17 professional education programs; 10 bachelor's programs; 7 master's programs and 4 doctoral programs) and ensures the training of highly qualified international-level personnel.

Educational programs operating at the faculty are internationally compatible and designed in line with Western university standards. They integrate international practices and experience, implemented at various Western universities and colleges. In addition to the programs offered in Georgian, the faculty also runs an English-language program in Mechanical Engineering, which enrolls students of various nationalities.

The programs include a “Production Practice” component implemented in collaboration with large and medium-sized industrial government and business organizations in Georgia. The faculty applies innovative teaching practices, emphasizing active cooperation with industry and government for both theoretical and practical training.

The faculty hosts modern-concept training and practical classes, laboratories and student spaces, funded by business organizations and international grants (examples include: “Tegeta Motors,” “Autotechno,” “Lion Trans,” “Baumer,” “TAM Management,” “ELREHA,” “Think Room,” “Sales Laboratory,” and others). These facilities enable students, faculty, and partners to conduct workshops, training sessions, and public events.

Aligned with GTU’s internationalization strategy, the faculty actively participates in Erasmus+ and other international programs of the European Commission, providing students and staff with opportunities for study abroad and further advanced education.

Since June 6, 2024, the Dean of the faculty has been Associate Professor Boris Gitolendia, PhD in Business Administration.
