The Faculty of Transport Systems and Mechanical Engineering was established in its current form based on the change in the name of the previously existing Faculty of Transport and Mechanical Engineering, which was implemented by Resolution No. 01-05-04/75 of the Academic Council of the Georgian Technical University, dated June 24, 2021 and the Representative Council (Senate) of September 30, 2021 By Resolution No. 01-06-02/37.

Currently, the Faculty of Transport Systems and Mechanical Engineering is one of the educational-scientific and administrative units of the Georgian Technical University, which prepares qualified specialists for the transport, machine-building-industrial and entrepreneurial fields.

Transport is the most important and ever-developing branch of the country’s national economy, the progress of which in the form of a single transport system is based on the harmonious combination of all its types (road, rail, air, sea, and others) and infrastructure (roads, railways, bridges, tunnels, and others). The creation of modern-level machine-building production facilities and their successful operation is also important for the industrial development of the country. The mission of the Faculty of Transport Systems and Mechanical Engineering of the Georgian Technical University is to carry out higher educational and scientific research activities about the mentioned branches of the national economy, to provide them with the necessary quality and quantity of specialists and scientific research results.

Currently, the faculty includes the following departments:

- Department of mechanical engineering and industrial technologies (501);

- Railway Transport Department (502);

- Department of Engineering Graphics and Technical Mechanics (503);

- Department of Transport and Industry Management (504);

- Motor Transport and Logistics Department (505);

The Department of Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Technology (formerly the Department of Mechanical Engineering Technology) was established at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in 1936. The founder of the department and the first head was a member-correspondent of the SSR Georgian Academy of Sciences, Professor Giorgi Gedevanishvili. In the following years, the heads of the department were: Professor Martin Kasiani (1941-1949), Academician of the Georgian Academy of Sciences Professor Teimuraz Loladze (1949-2000), Professors: Anzor Siradze (1989-1994); Merab Shvangiradze (acting 2000-2010), Raul Turmanidze (since 2010). The department was joined in 2021 by the Department of Production Technology Machines and Mechatronics. It united the former departments of „Drive systems, machine tools, and complexes“, „Machine building“, and „Automation production“ with ancient traditions of the GTU, the origins of which are related to the date of establishment of higher education in Georgia. At the beginning of the establishment of the departments, well-known scientists were G. Gotsiridze, G. Chikhladze, V. Tsotskhadze, I. Mikadze, and others. The Georgian School of Cutting Materials was founded under the leadership of the Academician Teimuraz Loladze; in 1980, under the leadership of Professors R. Turmanidze and B. Batiashvili, a research scientific laboratory for the processing of materials for micro-electronic equipment formed; In 1984 a Precision micro-tools and Technological equipment laboratory was established. They have received more than two dozen copyright certificates and patents from advanced countries (USA, EU countries, Japan). The Licenses were sold in Japan, France, and Cuba. Various international projects were implemented on the topic of international grants. Collaborators were John Moore from the Liverpool University of Great Britain and the University of Vienna. The Engineering Project clients were John Moore The Liverpool University. Highly efficient machine tool systems have been developed and implemented by the Department of Production Technological Machines and Mechatronics.

Department of Industrial Engineering and Technology - in 2012, the Department of „Printing and Light Industry“ was formed at the faculty by merging the Departments of Printing and Light Industry (currently the Department of Industrial Engineering and Technology). The Department has been headed by Professor Nia Natbiladze since 2018. Earlier (in 1999), Professor Jumber Uplisashvili established the Department of „Print Media and Computer Graphics“, which he headed until 2018. Since 1993, the Chair of „Modeling and Technology of Light Industry Products“ has been functioning, headed by Professor Lia Demetradze. In 1961, the Chair of „Wood Processing Technology“ was established, headed by professors Revaz Akhvlediani and Giorgi Jabua. In 2011, the Chair transformed into a forestry-technical department, the head of which was Professor Zaur Chitidze. This department joined the Department of Industrial Engineering and Technology in 2021. In 1946, at the Mechanical Faculty of the Georgian Industrial Institute, at that time (GII), the Department of Equipment for the Food Industry was established and headed by Academician of the Georgian Academy of Sciences Nikoloz Landia (1946-1959), honored figure of science and technology of Georgia, laureate of the state award, Professor Aleksandre Kakalashvili (1959-1990), laureate of the Honored Inventor State Prize of Georgia, Professor Nodar Zaldastanishvili (1990-1997), member of the Engineering Academy of Georgia, Professor Tamaz Megrelidze (1997-1961). Under the leadership of A. Kakalashvili, a problem laboratory of the Tea industry mechanical engineering was established, and new constructions of tea twisting and fermentation machines were developed. In 1996, the chair of automation of production processes was added to the department and named „Chair of automation of food and refrigeration industry equipment and production processes“. In 2007, the department was merged into the newly formed Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Faculty. Professor Tamaz Megrelidze was transferred to the head of the department. The direction of automation of food and refrigeration equipment and production was headed by the member-correspondent of the Georgian Engineering Academy, T.M.D. Professor Zurab Japaridze. In 2013, the Scientific Research Institute of the Food Industry of Georgia joined the Georgian Technical University under the leadership of the Director, Academician of the Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Professor Nugzar Baghaturia.

Department of Engineering Graphics and Technical Mechanics - in 2007, based on the general technical disciplines at the faculty, a large educational-scientific unit - Department of Engineering Graphics and Technical Mechanics was formed, and meritorious scientist, Professor, and Academician of the Academy of Education Sciences A. Shavgulidze was appointed. From 2011 to 2021, the Academician of the Academy of Education Sciences, Professor Ioseb Batsikadze, and from 2021 - Professor Gocha Chitiashvili, heads the department. Since 2014, the Computer center named after Professor Anzor Shavgulidze at the Department of Engineering Graphics and Technical Mechanics has been put into operation. Currently, the Engineering Graphics and Technical Mechanics Department includes training courses and modules in engineering graphics, theory of mechanisms and machines, machine parts, and lifting vehicles.

Department of Transport and Industry Management - Tbilisi Polytechnic Institute (Russian-speaking), founded in 1917, had a total of four departments, including the Department of Economics and Organization. Its governor and the first dean of the Faculty of Economics was I. S. Gambarov. Since 1936, the chair functioned as a general institute in the Georgian Industrial Institute. At the Georgian Polytechnic Institute of Georgia, the department functioned under the name „Department of Economics and Organization“ and served the faculties of all engineering disciplines and trained engineer-economists.
