The Faculty of Transport Systems and Mechanical Engineering was founded on the basis of the resolutions of the Academic Council of Georgia Technical University No. 01-05-04/75 of June 24, 2021 and the Representative Council (Senate) No. 01-06-02/37 of September 30, 2021, and it is formed by the Department of Transport and Mechanical Engineering on the basis of the faculty, which has been functioning since 2006 in the form of two - the faculty of transport and the faculty of mechanical engineering;

The history of the Faculty of Transport Systems and Mechanical Engineering begins in 1928, when the Faculty of Mechanics and Mechanical Engineering was first established and received its first stream of students in the same year. The Faculty of Transport was founded in 1959, when the Institute of Transport Engineers of Tbilisi Railways joined the Polytechnic Institute of Georgia. Also, the auto-mechanic faculty was established and the admission of students began in 1971, and in 1978 it was transformed into the automobile-traffic faculty. In 1990, a transport institute was founded on the basis of the road faculty and the transport faculty, which was named the transport faculty in 1995.

In 2006, the Faculty of Transport and the Faculties of Mechanics and Mechanical Engineering were merged, and the Faculty of Transport and Mechanical Engineering, founded on their basis, changed its name in 2021 to the Faculty of Transport Systems and Mechanics Engineering, and it currently operates under this name.
