In 2014, the Department of Food Technologies was established at the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Biosystems Engineering of the Georgian Technical University, which is still headed by the Academician of the Academy of Agricultural Sciences of Georgia, Professor Guram Tkemaladze.
Goals and objectives of the Department
Students of all three levels are involved in educational process of the Department. The goal of the Department is to educate specialists in the field of food technology, who will know the food technology of bakery products, sugar, alcohol, confectionery, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, meat and dairy products, canning production; to give students deep systematic knowledge in various fields of food technology by using innovative technologies.
At the Department of Food Technology of GTU, fundamental research projects are being completed under the leadership of Guram Tkemaladze, such projects include production of new food for functional (prophylactic-preventive) purposes, including alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, using ecologically pure and safe plant ingredients through processing and development of innovative technologies.
Successful implementation of the above-mentioned projects should ensure: protection and further development of biodiversity of the environment; restoration of forests and windbreaks; in general, promotion and development of agriculture; providing the population with especially healthy food products and raw materials; complying with needs of animal husbandry in plant food, which is unthinkable without perfecting the basic melioration measures of land resources; revival of almost all branches of agriculture in Georgia and, accordingly, improvement of the ecological environment (soil, air, water); prolongation of human life; reduction of pollution and disease risks.
Students and professors of all three levels of education are actively involved in the research process. Scientific works have been published in relation to current research.
Professors and teachers of the Department participate in international scientific conferences.
During the educational process text-books are published.
The Department has a program that is a joint educational double-diploma program of the Georgian Technical University and the University of France in the sphere of food technology. The Department of Food Technologies has a functioning laboratorynamed after Professor Vakhtang Ugrekhelidze.
