History of establishment:
On May 13, 2014, by the initiative of the Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, His Holiness and Beatitude Ilia II, the National Center of Viticulture and Winemaking was established, one of the founders of which is the Georgian Technical University.
In November 2017, the Department of Viticulture and Enology was established at the Faculty of Agricultural Sciences and Biosystems Engineering, which combines research and training areas in the field of viticulture and winemaking.
From the day of establishment, the Department was headed by Professor Nino Chkhartishvili.
Mission and vision of the Department:
- Continuous chain of education - the only University which offers bachelor's program in the field of viticulture and winemaking.
- Viticulture and winemaking English and Georgian language master's educational programs, developed by qualified personnel working in the private sector as well as in the scientific part of viticulture and winemaking.
- Provision of result-oriented education and scientific research in the field of viticulture and winemaking in accordance with the requirements of quality and continuous development, sustainable development within the framework of research and ethical environment in order to meet the requirements of the local and regional market.
- Strengthening students' intellectual thinking.
- Taking care of the future leader of the field considering requirements of the international market,
Goals of the Department:
- Training of professional personnel in the field of viticulture and winemaking, considering requirements of the international market.
- Providing quality training programs in order to promote development of the society.
- Continuous development of bachelor's, master's and doctoral programs for the scientific promotion of viticulture-winemaking;
- Conducting studies and applied studies for the purpose of development of agriculture and viticulture-wine industry in the country.
- Activation of cultural and scientific relations of the faculty and other international institutes and faculties, planning of conferences and other activities in order to share joint projects and experiences.
Research component
- Current research projects in the Department are carried out on experimental and production bases of private and state institutions of viticulture and winemaking within the frameworks of the memorandum of cooperation concluded with them;
- The Department is recognized on national and international level and cooperates with the world's leading universities and research institutions.
• Student and personnel exchange programs, as well as many joint research projects, are ongoing within the frameworks of bilateral agreements.
