The Academic Department of Private Law of the Faculty of Law and International Relations is an educational-scientific organizational unit of the Faculty, which provides educational-methodical and scientific-research activities within the framework of educational programs.

The establishment of the private law department has a long history.

In 1978, the chair of patent studies was created at the Polytechnic Institute of Georgia, which was headed by Davit Devdariani from 1978 to 1992, and in 1992-1995 by L. Lomarjidze.

Since 1995, the cathedra of patent studies was transformed into the chair of economic and international law, and it was headed by Mindia Ugrekhelidze, a recognized scientist and public figure in the field of law. In 1997, parallel to the cathedra of economic and international law, the chair of law and criminology was created, which was headed by Avtandil Kalmakhelidze, a well-known practicing lawyer and chairman of Tbilisi City Court in 1997-2006.

In 1999, Mindia Ugrekhelidze was elected as a judge at the European Court of Human Rights, and Ketevan Kokrashvili was assigned to perform his duties at the Technical University. In 2000, the department changed its name again, it was called the Department of Law, and Ketevan Kokrashvili became its head.

Since 2007, the Department of Law and Criminology has been transformed into the Department of Law. Constitutionalist professor Zaza Rukhadze was appointed as the head.

In 2009-2012, the Law Department was headed by Professor Jemal Ghakhokidze, a prominent statesman and practicing lawyer.

From 2012 to 2017, the Law Department was headed by Irakli Gabisonia, Doctor of Law, Professor, Member of the Academic Council.

Since 2017, three academic departments of law have been established at the Faculty of Law and International Relations.

From 2017 to the present, the Department of Private Law is headed by the head of the undergraduate law program, Professor Tsiala Gloveli.

Undergraduate and graduate programs of law are implemented in the Department of Private Law.

In the academic department of private law, a laboratory for notarial actions has been operating since 2019, where students and interested persons have the opportunity to conduct simulated actions under the supervision of working notaries.

From 2021, an intellectual property laboratory was opened in the academic department of private law. The purpose of which is: examination of drafts of international and other types of agreements, treaties and memoranda on issues in the field of intellectual property and development of appropriate conclusions and recommendations; • Establishing partnership relations with foreign universities and relevant agencies in the field of intellectual property in order to implement bilateral and multilateral international cooperation. Finding, processing and further analysis of the best international practices in the field of intellectual property; • participation in the preparation of materials for educational literature and periodicals in intellectual property law and not only; For GTU academic staff, legal assistance is provided in the following areas: Intellectual property objects (invention, utility model, design, trademark, designation of origin, geographical indication, integrated circuit topology, copyright and related rights, new varieties of plants and animals, etc.) drafting of applications, registration, obtaining protective documents, maintaining them in force, use, transfer of rights, registration of license agreement, protection of rights and provision of legal advice in the field of intellectual property. Planning of short and long-term trainings based on practical and scientific needs, both for academic staff of Stu and students. To develop the laboratory, to develop and implement various innovative projects; and others, which arouses great interest among students.

In the academic department of private law, there is also a law clinic, which is very important. Its history dates back to the independent formation of the Faculty of Law and International Relations. It is the best way to develop practical skills on a university basis. Here, students have the opportunity to work directly with the beneficiaries under the supervision of qualified practicing lecturers and provide consultations.

Many scientific works, manuals and monographs have been published by the professors of the Academic Department of Private Law. Most of them are professional practicing lawyers.
