Interior design direction

In the second half of the 20th century, the world architectural community faced new challenges. A specialist who, based on the traditions of the architectural design culture, could organize the urban environment or interior space with subject fillers, became in demand. In response to this challenge, in 1992, at the Faculty of Architecture of the Georgian Technical University, under the leadership of Professor Konstantine Amirejibi, the Department of Design was established, which he successfully headed until 2004. Later, professor Aleko Korkotashvili performed the duties of the head of the department. In 2008, the direction of interior design was included in the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning. And in 2013, in the field of architectural design, based on both traditional and innovative studies, in order to promote students' theoretical and practical activities, the Department of Interior and Design was created, which was headed by Professor Tinatin Chigogidze. Since 2015, a new direction has appeared within the department - "Fashion Design".

The successful work of the department was ensured by highly qualified, highly experienced academic and invited staff.

From 2022, the Department of Interior and Design joined the Department of Architectural Planning and Urbanism. As a result, the Department of Architecture, Urbanism and Environmental Design was formed, the head of which was appointed Prof. Tinatin Chigogidze.

The direction of interior design is led by experienced professors of the field: Tinatin Chigogidze (head of the department), Natia Kochladze, Ketevan Salukvadze, Valeri Mchedlishvili, Shota Gelashvili. They are actively involved in both research and practical activities. The teachers working here systematically participate in local and international scientific conferences and forums, in the international exchange project EASMUS+ and Erasmus K107 Project Mobility, publish scientific articles and publications, including in highly rated refereed journals. A number of manuals, auxiliary manuals, study-lecture courses, methodical references have been prepared by their authorship.

The scientific, practical work and experience of the staff accumulates in the educational process and has a positive impact on the results achieved at all three levels of education. This is evidenced by the high level of student projects, including bachelor's projects, master's theses and dissertations, performed under the guidance of teachers of the department.

The competition activity of interior design students is great, during which the faculty was named several times: competition: "Painting studio interior design project" - 03.06.2014;

Residential interior competition 24.03.2017; 2018 and 2019. First place for the best master's work in the contest of master's diplomas organized by the Georgian Union of Architects. Exhibitions of students' term papers are organized systematically.

The group of interior design subjects includes both residential and public and industrial buildings. Within the program, students learn the theoretical and practical basics of interior design, interior styles, innovative finishing materials in architectural design, and three-dimensional modeling.

Students, together with professors, are systematically introduced to modern interior design trends in active architectural firms, as well as organized excursions to objects related to the course theme and meetings with future employers.
