The foundation of higher architectural education in Georgia was laid on January 16, 1922, at the Construction Department of the Polytechnic Faculty of Tbilisi State University. The first dean of the faculty was Professor Aleksandre Didebulidze.
In 1924, the architectural specialty of the Construction Department was named "Architecture". In subsequent years, the specialty changed its name several times: in 1928–1930 it was called "Civil Architecture", in 1930–1933 - "Civil Construction and Design", and in 1933–1969 - "Architecture". In 1969, on the basis of the architecture specialty of the Construction Faculty, the Faculty of Architecture was established. In 1991, the Georgian Polytechnic Institute was transformed into the Georgian Technical University, and the Faculty of Architecture within it was transformed into the Institute of Architecture, whose director in 1991–2005 was Professor Giorgi Salukvadze, Doctor of Architecture. In 2005, the institute changed its status again and was renamed the Faculty of Architecture, Urban Planning and Design.
The first Georgian higher architectural education diploma holders were the future world-famous architects Archil Kurdiani and Ketevan Sokolova-Kurdiani, who graduated from the Polytechnic Faculty in 1928.
The deans of the Faculty of Architecture, established in 1969, in different years were:
• 1969–1972 — Akaki Berishvili (Candidate of Architecture, Associate Professor);
• 1972–1974 — Nodar Mgaloblishvili (Candidate of Architecture, Professor);
• 1974–1975 — Tinatin Chichua (Candidate of Architecture, Professor);
• 1975–1978 — Mikheil Lortkipanidze (Candidate of Architecture, Professor);
• 1978–1983 — Giorgi Salukvadze (Doctor of Architecture, Professor);
• 1983–1987 — Konstantine Amirejibi (Doctor of Architecture, Professor);
• 1987–1989 — Nikoloz Shavishvili (Doctor of Architecture, Professor);
• 2005–2017 — Gocha Mikiashvili (Doctor of Architecture, Professor);
• 2017–2024 — Nino Imnadze (Doctor of Architecture, Professor).
Since 2024, the faculty has been headed by Doctor of Architecture, Professor Nugzar Khvedeliani.
Since 2009, the faculty has had two academic departments, which combine various directions:
1. Department of Architecture, Urbanism and Environmental Design #601 — Head: Doctor of Architecture, Professor Tinatin Chigogidze.
This department combines the following directions: Architecture of Buildings, Urban Planning, Environmental Design, Interior Design.
2. Department of Fundamentals, Theory and Fine Arts of Architecture #602 — Head: Doctor of Architecture, Associate Professor Manana Tavkhelidze.
This department combines the following areas: Fundamentals of Architectural Planning, History and Theory of Architecture and Urban Planning, Fine Arts, Architectural Structures and Architectural Physics, as well as Fashion Design Technologies.
The Faculty of Architecture, Urbanism and Design offers five educational programs at different levels of study: Bachelor's Program "Architecture", Russian-language Bachelor's Program "Architecture" and (since 2017) Bachelor's Program "Fashion Design Technologies", as well as Master's and Doctoral Educational Programs "Architecture".
