In Georgia, on January 16, 1922, the foundations of higher architectural education were laid at the construction department of the polytechnic faculty at Tbilisi State University. The first dean of the faculty was Professor Alexander Didebulidze. 

In 1924, the architecture specialty of the construction department was called "Architectural Studies". In 1928-1930, the Faculty of Architecture was created on the basis of civil architecture, in 1930-1933 - civil construction and design, in 1933-1969 - architecture, in 1969, the Faculty of Architecture was established on the basis of the specialty of the Faculty of Construction, and in 1991 - the Institute of Architecture of the Technical University of Georgia.

Archil Kurdiani and Ketevan Sokolova-Kurdiani, who graduated from the Polytechnic Faculty in 1928, became the holders of the first Georgian higher architectural education diploma.

The first dean of the Faculty of Architecture, created in 1969, was Ak. Berishvili, candidate of architecture, docent (1969-1972); 1972-74 - N. Mgaloblishvili, candidate of architecture, professor, in 1974-75 - D. Chichua, Doctor of Architecture, Professor, In 1975-78 - M. Lortkipanidze, candidate of architecture, professor, in 1978-83 - G. Salukvadze, Doctor of Architecture, Professor, 1983-87. - K. Amirejibi, candidate of architecture, professor, 1987-89 - N. Shavishvili, Doctor of Architecture, Professor, 1989-91. - G. Mikiashvili, Doctor of Architecture, Professor. 

In 1991, the Polytechnic Institute of Georgia was transformed into a technical university, and the Institute of Architecture was a part of it, the director of which in 1991-2005 was Doctor of Architecture, Professor Giorgi Salukvadze.

In 2005, the Institute of Architecture was transformed into the Faculty of Architecture, Urbanism and Design, and Professor Gocha Mikiashvili was elected as the dean, who headed the faculty until 2017. 

Since 2017, Doctor of Architecture, Professor Nino Imnadze has been elected as the dean of the faculty.

Since 2009, two teaching academic departments have been operating at the faculty, which combine different directions:

Department of Fundamentals, Theory and Fine Arts of Architecture - Head Doctor of Architecture, Professor Marina Maisuradze. The following directions are united in this department: the basics of architectural planning; history and theory of architecture and urban planning; fine art. 

At the Faculty of Architecture, Urbanism and Design, seven educational programs are implemented at different levels of education: Bachelor's program "Architecture", Russian-language Bachelor's program "Architecture" and Bachelor's program "Technologies of Fashion Design", which have been implemented at the faculty since 2017. The educational program "Architecture" is implemented at the master's level, and the educational programs "Architecture" and "Architectural Studies" at the doctoral level.
