In the 1993-1994 academic year, at the Faculty of Chemical Technology, on the initiative of Academician Givi Tsintsadze, the specialty "Pharmacy" was opened at the recommendation of the Scientific Board. The opening of the said specialty was based on the many years of experience accumulated by the scientific-pedagogical staff of the Faculty of Chemical and Biological Technology: in receiving medicinal substances, using them for medical purposes, as well as in the production of teaching-methodical works in this aspect.

From the 1994/95 academic year, the admission of students with the "Pharmacy" specialty was ongoing.

On May 25, 1999, the "Pharmacy" scientific center was established, supervised by Prof. L. Eristavi.

On May 17, 2000, at the then Faculty of Chemical and Biological Technology, the Profiling Chair "Pharmacy" (#87) was opened. (Chairman Assoc. Revaz Skhiladze 2000 - 2002). The department was staffed by professors with decades of experience in this field. Local, qualified personnel were employed and educated at the department. In 2004 - 2012, the Department of Pharmacy was renamed - Department of Pharmacochemistry and Pharmacology (No. 87), and on 15.05.2012, the Department of Pharmacy was opened, the department is headed by Professor Tamar Tsintsadze.

During its existence, the Department of Pharmacy has produced many specialists, graduates of our specialty successfully work in pharmacy institutions of different regions of Georgia, in pharmaceutical enterprises and expert laboratories, in the Department of Medicine and Pharmaceutical Activities of the Ministry of Labor, Health and Social Protection of Georgia. Many pharmacists trained at the department have achieved great success in their practical activities, among them are leading specialists of large firms, a part of the graduates participate in the launching and operation processes of the pharmacy network and production in Georgia.

The department has an active relationship with such pharmaceutical companies as: "Aversi-Pharma", JMP and PSP, Ltd. "Gefa", as well as "Egrisi" Pharma, "Iberia" Pharma, on the basis of systematic contact with them, the needs of these companies are reflected in the work plans of the pharmacy specialty every year. The quality of the work carried out is indicated by the letters of thanks sent by Paata Kurtanidze, the general director of "Aversi Pharma" to the management of the Faculty of Chemical Technology and Metallurgy and the Department of Chemical Technology of Georgian Technical University, in which it is emphatically mentioned that "the medical firm "Aversi" is working successfully in the pharmacy network of the Georgian Technical University. Graduates of the specialty "Pharmacy, who are distinguished by a high level of theoretical training" (style reserved).

Until the opening of the pharmacy specialty at the Faculty of Chemical Technology and Metallurgy, scientific-research work is being carried out in the following directions:

Obtaining biologically active substances from natural raw materials of Georgia, studying their physico-chemical properties and preparing medicinal preparations;

The role of trace elements in medicine (new biodegradable and biocompatible polymers were synthesized on the basis of natural amino acids and commercially available practical compounds, which were introduced in the form of experimental artificial skin. The prospect of its use in medicine is great;

Development and research of recipes for cosmetic and perfumery products containing natural raw materials of Georgia; organization and management of pharmaceutical business; clinical pharmacy, pharmaceutical care; biopharmaceuticals; homeopathic remedies and their research; bioethics; Pharmacognostic study of herbal raw materials; History of pharmacy development.

A large number of excellent students participate in scientific research work. Successes achieved in scientific-research work are organically combined in lecture courses, as well as in laboratory and practical studies;

More than 398 scientific works have been published in connection with the above-mentioned topics.

The young pharmacists trained by the Georgian Technical University excelled both in science and in practical work. Graduates fully meet the requirements of the employment market.
