From September 19, 2017, by the decision of the Academic Board of the Georgia Technical University, the Academic Department of Public Law was established at the Faculty of Law and International Relations.

The Academic Department of Public Law is an educational-scientific organizational unit of the faculty, which provides educational-methodical and scientific-research activities within the framework of educational programs.

In 2017-2018, the Academic Department of Public Law was headed by Professor Mariam Jikia.

2018-2022 Academic Department of Public Law was headed by Associate Professor Avtandil Kalmakhelidze.

From 2023 to the present, the Academic Department of Public Law is headed by Professor Nino Nishnianidze, a member of the Academic Council of GTU.

The academic department of public law has the following history of establishment:

Back in 1978, the cathedra of patent studies was established at the Polytechnic Institute of Georgia, which was headed by Davit Devdariani in 1978-1992, and in 1992-1995 by L. Lomarjidze.

Since 1995, the cathedra of patent studies was transformed into a cathedra of economic and international law, which was headed by Mindia Ugrekhelidze, a recognized scientist and public figure in the field of law.

In 1997, the cathedra of law and criminology was created parallel to the cathedra of economic and international law, the head of which in 1997-2006 was the well-known lawyer, chairman of the Tbilisi City Court, Avtandil Kalmakhelidze.

In 1999, Mindia Ugrekhelidze was elected as a judge at the European Court of Human Rights, and Ketevan Kokrashvili was assigned to perform her duties at the Technical University.

In 2000, the department changed its name and was called the Department of Law, headed by Ketevan Kokrashvili.

Since 2007, the cathedra of law and criminology has been transformed into a department of law, and constitutionalist professor Zaza Rukhadze has been appointed as its head.

In 2009-2012, the Law Department was headed by professor, prominent statesman and practicing lawyer Jemal Ghakhokidze.

From 2012 to 2017, the head of the Law Department was Irakli Gabisonia, Doctor of Law, Professor, Member of the Academic Council.

The public law laboratory is functioning in the academic department of public law, the head of which is professor Zurab Melkadze.

The Academic Department of Public Law implements academic educational programs in the field of public law.

The academic department of public law is constantly working on current issues in the public sphere of public law.
