From May 25, 2016, a new Faculty of Law and International Relations was established at Georgian Technical University, the purpose and task of which is to create another competitive, strong educational and scientific center in the educational environment of Georgia and to provide students with a full-fledged and modern education.
The Faculty was built on such a strong foundation as was the Department of Social Sciences, and which is now the Department of Politics and International Relations, and the Department of Law.
The Department of Politics and International Relations was established in 2006 on the basis of political science, international relations and diplomacy, history and culture of Georgia, philosophy and public relations, and since 2013 it has been functioning as the Department of Social Sciences, later the Department of Politics and International Relations, headed by Doctor of Political Sciences, Professor Tamar Kiknadze.
The history of the Department of Law began with the creation of the Department of Patent Studies in 1978. Over time, the department changed, expanded, and became a law department that had to respond to modern challenges and compete with other higher education institutions, respond to the requirements of time and modernity. From the day of establishment, the cathedra and later the law department were led by eminent scientists and professors in the field of law: Mindia Ugrekhelidze, Ketevan Kokrashvili, Zaza Rukhadze, Jemal Ghakhokidze and Irakli Gabisonia.
From January 23, 2017, doctor of law, professor, former member of the Academic Board Irakli Gabisonia was elected as the first dean of the Faculty of Law and International Relations.
Today, the Faculty of Law and International Relations fully responds to modern standards and challenges. The faculty has several teaching laboratories:
- Forensics laboratory, which is equipped with modern technical means and serves the process of formation and teaching of professional skills for students. In the same laboratory, a 4-level program of professional education is implemented. The criminology laboratory of the Faculty of Law and International Relations of the Georgian Technical University is a precedent in the form of a laboratory on the educational base and a guarantee that the faculty will train and present professional staff to the public.
- Practical law clinic helps students to develop professional skills of a lawyer. Under the supervision of professors and practicing lawyers, students conduct free legal consultations for socially vulnerable groups. The clinic is an example of the fact that students, in addition to theoretical knowledge, get practical experience at the university, which is very important in their future professional activities.
- The public law laboratory, headed by the famous professor-emeritus Avtandil Demetrashvili, is unique with its exhibits and library, where you can see the constitutions, legal acts and symbols of more than fifty countries of the world. Among them are the old Georgian ecclesiastical monuments, the exposition depicting the first and active Republic of Georgia. In the laboratory, meetings are held with famous lawyers, prominent scientists, politicians, they share with students the accumulated knowledge and experience, modern practice.
The faculty has a Russian-language study sector, where representatives of ethnic minorities and students from neighboring countries receive education, as well as Georgian language courses, where students can prepare in the Georgian language and receive education in the Georgian language.
Today it can be said that the Department of Politics and International Relations and the Department of Law still have graduates who are a successful and important part of our society and make a great contribution to the development of society and the state, and the faculty created on a joint basis, with the help of strong and meritorious professors and teachers, can to have a say in the process of building the state.
