The Department is headed by Professor Mirin Kalabegishvili

The goal of the Hydroengineering Department is to become a global educational-scientific engineering center of education and science, which will form a creative sphere of the university, train researchers and specialists, successful members of the society who can solve the most important scientific and engineering-technical tasks. To be among the leading international universities. To actively elaborate and develop the training of specialists and scientific personnel of various levels, to ensure the continuity of the development of science and its integration with the world’s education scientific community. To train high-level engineering and scientific personnel in the field of hydrotechnical construction in accordance with international requirements; professional level should ensure high competitiveness, both in the local and on the international labor market.

Graduate students should represent a leading engineering force in our country in the design of hydrotechnical facilities, as well as in engineering studies and solving problems in their operation.

Main objectives of the hydroengineering department:

In the educational work, much attention is paid to involvement in engineering problems in operation of hydrotechnical facilities in our country. Engineering issues are developed as topics and discussed at student scientific conferences.

Scientific work is presented in the following main directions

Doctoral and master's theses mainly reflect modern engineering problems of hydrotechnical research, including hydrotechnical facilities under construction and in operation in our country. Within the last 5 years, 7 dissertations have been defended in the mentioned direction.

The following 5 dissertations are in the final stage of research:

Engineering studies are based on modern numerical methods of research. Calculation of statics and seismic problems is based on solutions using finite and boundary element methods.

Studies considering non-stationary filtering and transient voltages caused by temperature regimes use classical solutions as well as numerical methods.

Modern complex programs - LIRA, ANSYS and others are used in numerical calculations of engineering tasks.

Employees of the Department participate in:

The material base of the department includes hydraulics and hydrotechnical facilities research study laboratories. Teaching scientific and expert laboratory of the Faculty of Construction of the GTU is used for real objects.

A complex research laboratory of hydrotechnical structures is currently being designed on the territory of Georgian Technical University, construction of which is planned for 2018. The laboratory is intended for static and seismic studies of hydrotechnical constructions, wave and estuarial processes, as well as laboratory studies of water. The laboratory will be equipped with the latest research equipment, including a seismic platform.

Graduates of the Department successfully work in various engineering institutions, including "Energopro" LLC, "Georgian amelioration" LLC, "Shtuki" LLC and others.

Activity of the Department of Water Supply, Sewerage Systems, Heat- Air-Supply and Ventilation and Engineering Equipment of Buildings (hereinafter the “Deartment”) shall be based on the principles of academic freedom, unity of teaching, learning and research, equality and transparency.

Water supply, sewerage, heat-air-supply and ventilation have an important place in the development of the country's growing economy.

The Department is guided by principles based on the ideals of democracy and humanism and provides the public with reliable, educated and highly qualified resources in the field of water supply, sewerage, gas supply, heating and ventilation.

Mission of the Department:

  1. Provision of the highest quality education to students in the above-mentioned engineering field at all levels of education (professional, bachelor's, master's and doctoral).
  2. Integration of engineering-scientific and engineering-technological knowledge, which expands the knowledge base, which, in turn, contributes to the sustainable development of the society.
  3. Elaboration and implementation of educational programs based on modern knowledge and practice.
  4. Conducting prospective interdisciplinary theoretical and applied research in order to solve the above-mentioned engineering problems;
  5. Counseling and other support to ensure students' academic success and high competitiveness on the local and international labor market.
  6. To maintain intellectual and cooperative environment, which will help students and employees of the department achieve high professional results.
  7. Providing students with modern teaching resources (accessibility of modern laboratories and literature).

Goals of the Department

Main strategy of the Department

The main strategy of the Department is considered to be establishment in the form of an innovation-production unit. The establishment of the Department into innovative and industrial institution will be implemented by the modernization-synthesis of modern systematic educational-scientific and production complexes, which is a harmoniously implemented compiler of modern market realities, based on the idea of continuous education, as well as on the saturation of the educational process with real practical, problematic, applied, scientific models.

Development of Department’s organizational structure will be maintained, which is reflected in: e-learning, virtual classes, digital laboratories and the latest technical means of distant learning.

The Department’s infrastructure will be developed: improvement of the design of auditoriums, laboratories, faculty rooms, corridors and storage rooms and furnishing them with modern furniture. Also, the auditoriums should be equipped with tools for e-learning.

Arrangement of an innovative scientific-educational center, which will support the development of scientific-research projects considering subject of the Department. Also, as it is known, an agreement has been concluded between the Government of the Republic of Austria and the Government of Georgia on the construction and equipment of an ultra-modern scientific-research laboratory of hydrotechnical structures within the structure of the Faculty of Construction.

The laboratory will serve both educational-scientific and expert processes in the following fields:

  1. Hydraulics.
  2. Hydromechanics.
  3. Hydrology.
  4. Water treatment-purification.
  5. Mechatronics.
  6. Thermotechnics.
  7. Welding.
  8. Laboratory of ecology.
  9. Laboratory of computer control of mechanisms.

The department's priority will be to establish its place on the markets of scientific products. It is an urgent necessity to provide personnel for innovative work, which implies the proper functioning of training, retraining and qualification raising of specialists in the innovative field, well-defined thematic relations with international engineering professional societies, including engineering-educational institutions of leading countries.

It is important to have a set of ideas about methods, knowledge and field competences. It is an accepted scientific practice that has traditionally developed and continues to develop within it. On the other hand, the Department should create tools, structures and initiate processes to support dynamics of scientific development, elaborate and develop new topics.

All of the above-mentioned represents an urgent need for mandatory consideration of modern research aspects in the educational programs of all levels of the Department. We should change the ratio of teaching and research components in such a way that the research component at the doctoral level appears as a decisive component of the educational program.

Modern studies along with modern teaching and research material base also need modern literature.

Project # 135: Within the framework of "Academic cooperation for increasing opportunities in environmental education", with participation of professors from BOKU University (Vienna, Austria) it is planned to prepare two master's programs: "Water Engineering" (with modification) and "Environmental Engineering" (new) for e-learning using the mMoodle program.

The structure and sectoral direction of the department's educational programs and syllabuses are generally in line with the subject problems of the respective fields, but, unfortunately, we are still lagging behind the criteria of modern relevant educational institutions.

Which means that:

In modern field of education, a person cannot get knowledge that will be enough for a lifetime, so a systematic objective of teaching is to teach a person how to learn for a lifetime.

An educational institution should provide society not only with knowledge skills but also educate individual’s conscience, which is organized by value categories and is an ethical dilemma not only on a global scale, but also the most important challenge of the modern educational field, because a technological person without ethics is the biggest threat to humanity.

The long history of our country has shown us multiply times that a person cannot develop without the education of faith, love, humility, self-restraint, benevolence, politeness, the ability to help others in times of trouble, and even the shortcomings allowed in the upbringing of one person may turn into a very dangerous manifestation of a person's character and cause irreparable damage to society.
