On January 16, 1922, the Polytechnic Faculty was established at Tbilisi State University, where three departments were operating: construction, mechanical and mining. Professor A. Didibudze was elected as Dean of the Faculty. At the beginning of 1924, 277 students were enrolled in three courses of the faculty, whose education was provided by 236 lecturers and technical workers, including 36 professors and 20 assistant professors.

In 1928, the Polytechnic Faculty separated from Tbilisi State University and on its basis the Georgian Polytechnic Institute was established. Soon, the existing Russian Polytechnic Institute was transferred into it, where the construction department was transformed into the faculty construction and was divided into Georgian and Russian sectors. Professor K. Zavriev performed duties of the Faculty Dean.

The departments of the Faculty of Construction within the structure of the Polytechnic Institute, were as follows: Department of Roads and Bridges (two sectors, Georgian and Russian); Hydrotechnical Department (two sectors, Georgian and Russian); Architectural department (Georgian sector); Transport and exploitation department (Russian sector).

In the 1960’s, in accordance with new requirements, two specialties were opened at the faculty: "Heat-air supply and ventilation" (1963) and "Manufacturing of construction products and structures" (1967), the first of which trained engineers in the field of heat-air supply and industrial ventilation and the second one – engineer-construction technologists for such important branches of construction industry as production of concrete and reinforced concrete prefabricated constructions.

The process of intensive development made it necessary to separate the faculty of architecture from the faculty of construction in 1969, and in 1971 the hydrotechnical and plumbing faculties have separated as well. As a result of fundamental changes, only two specialties remained at the Faculty of Construction: "Industrial and civil construction" and "Manufacturing of construction products and constructions". In 1976 the engineering-pedagogical specialty "Construction" was added to the above-mentioned specialties, which trained engineers-teachers of construction disciplines for secondary special and vocational schools.

A new department N122 "Technical diagnostics and technical examination of buildings" was established in 2000. The main direction of this department was research, diagnostics and technical expertise of buildings and constructions.

At different times, the faculty was headed by the following deans: G. Mukhadze, Sh. Tsotadze, P. Uridia, D. Dolidze, A. Kakushadze, K. Andghuladze, N. Danelia, G. Ninua, L. Gvelesiani, M. Adeishvili, R. Imadedze, G. Laghundaridze, Z. Gedenidze, D. Gurgenidze, Z. Gvishiani.

The faculty has the following educational programs: Construction - bachelor's, master's, doctoral; Civil Engineering - bachelor; Construction Engineering and Management - Bachelor; Construction - Bachelor (Russian); San Diego State University - English-language undergraduate program in civil engineering and construction engineering; Construction management - master's program; Water Engineering (English) - master's program; Military Engineering - doctoral program.

Department No. 105 Water Supply, Sewerage Systems, Heat- Air-Supply and Ventilation and Engineering Equipment of Buildings was established at the Faculty of Construction of the Georgian Technical University in 2013. The Department was headed by Professor Nikoloz Natsvlishvili until March 2017, and from March 2017 the Department was headed byProfessor Guram Soselia, who was replaced by Professor Aleksandre Bagration-Davitashvili. In May 2022, the Department was joined by the Department of Hydrotechnics and the new union was named the Department of Hydrotechnics and Civil Engineering.

In 1985 the Department of Construction Computer Design under the name of I.Verulava was established on the basis of the former department #90 at the Georgian Technical University (direction) “Automated design systems”, which at that time was one of the first departments in this direction in our country.

In 1985-2001, the first head and founder of the Department was Professor Iuza Verulava.

From 2001 to 2004 the Department was headed by Professor Nikoloz Todua (until his passing), who played a big role in strengthening the material and technical base of the direction. Since 2004 this field was headed by Professor Murman Kublashvili. Since 2011 the direction has been transformed into #106 Department of Computer Design of Construction.

Students of the faculty actively participate in various international conferences and grant projects, in international exhibition of education. The students and academic personnel of the faculty systematically participate in the ERASMUS+ exchange program in Italy, France, Poland, Germany and other countries.

Currently 8 academic departments are functioning at the faculty:

No.101 Department of Engineering mechanics and technical expertise of construction; No. 102 Department of civil and industrial construction; #103 Department of civil and industrial construction technologies and construction materials; N104 Department of hydrotechnics and civil engineering; No. 105 Road Department; No. 106 Department of construction computer design; No. 107 Department of construction economics and management; No. 108 Department of construction machinery.

The faculty has the following educational and research laboratories:

educational, scientific, expert examination laboratory of construction; educational-scientific and expert laboratory of hydro-engineering; A. Gorgidze educational and scientific laboratory   of mechanics; water supply, wastewater and water purification laboratory.
